Fleming Street (aka Fleming Row) was once known for its abundance of gay guesthouses. Now only the strongest have survived.
While many have disappeared, Equator Resort is still there. The clothing optional, gay male resort is one of only two all-male, gay retreats remaining on the row, and one of three in all of Key West! Having becoming a local fixture after more than 18 years, the resort has decided to expand rather than fold.
Equator Resort (818 Fleming Street, Key West, FL 33040 Tel: (305) 294-7775) just finished renovations to its all-new addition. The resort bought the building next door, the old Coral Tree, and dusted it off to combine it with their existing space. The two buildings create a spacious, comfortable getaway retreat with two pools, two hot tubs and a brand new bar. This expansion puts the destination on the map as Key West’s premier all-male gay resort.
According to a review in The Voice: “Dramatically restored turn-of-the-century buildings, designer fabrics, feather pillows, Italian-tile baths, phones with voice mail, whirlpool baths, French doors, and pitched ceilings. All around, this is one of the finest gay resorts in Florida.”
The resort offers a continental breakfast plus afternoon happy hour with complimentary drinks: wine, pina coladas, and frozen daiquiris. There is also a 15 percent discount for those men in uniform (military, police, & EMTs). As a clothing optional resort, GNI members receive a 10 percent discount.
