New South Florida LGBT / Straight Youth Concert Band Supports Anti-Bullying Through Music

MIAMI, FL  – The “It Gets Better” video project, the brainchild of author and journalist Dan Savage, along with other anti-bullying campaigns, are providing inspiration for the Youth
Pride Band of South Florida, an honors band comprised of high school  students who have joined together to promote tolerance and understanding through music. The band is a project of the South Florida Pride Wind  Ensemble (SFPWE).

The Youth Pride Band consists of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning students, as well as straight allies from various South Florida high schools. Three student band members will each receive $1,000 college scholarships.

Although there are more than twenty adult gay bands across North America, the Youth Pride Band of South Florida is the first of its kind, says SFPWE president Alain Ortiz.

“With so many teen suicides and assaults occurring in the past year or two, we felt it important to do what we could to address bullying and provide a positive experience for young musicians,” Ortiz explained. “For many of us, band was a place where we could escape the teasing and really fit in.”

The Youth Pride Band’s 27 student members, ages 15 to 18, will make their concert debut in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, Feb. 12th at 7 p.m.

Internationally-acclaimed composer and conductor David Shaffer of Miami University of Ohio will conduct a program of traditional band works, in addition to his own compositions.
Natalie Mullen, 17, is a clarinetist from McArthur High School in Hollywood. “It’s really important for me to support my friends,” she says. An openly-gay friend at her school broke both his legs after trying to commit suicide by jumping from a second story building. Another admitted on Facebook that he cut himself. “The bullying really affects their self-esteem,” Mullen emphasized.

Christina Dunbar, 18, is president of the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) at Pembroke Pines Charter High School, one of Broward County’s largest GSAs. The flutist, who is bisexual, says she has experienced firsthand the challenges of coming-out as a teen, as well as the homophobia of classmates, which is often masked as playful hazing and good-natured teasing. “This is a side of the gay community that I hadn’t seen,” she says about the SFPWE. “It’s amazing how supportive everybody has been.”

Says Shaffer, who has conducted bands across North America and was himself the victim of teen-aged bullying: “This is a fantastic opportunity to get kids involved in a weekend making good music and bringing young people together.” The conductor was recently commissioned by the Toronto (Canada) Board of Education to compose a piece that specifically addresses bullying. “It’s important. I definitely relate back to when I was in junior high school.”

The Pride Youth Band also provides some students with an opportunity to perform that they can’t get at school. Gay saxophonist Julio Marcone, 17, attends Fort Lauderdale High School, which recently eliminated its band program due to budget cuts. A scheduling mistake landed him in band in middle school, so he learned to read music, took up the trumpet and later switched to tenor saxophone. “It’s been an experience,” he says of the first rehearsal. “I heard about the band from a friend and I’m so glad I have the chance to play again.”

The Youth Pride Band will open the Broward Center concert, followed by a performance by the SFPWE. Under the leadership of artistic director Dan Bassett, the organization has become a leader in the gay band movement.

“Not only are we providing an educational experience for these talented young people,” notes Bassett, “they are getting the opportunity to work with successful role models and perform with one of the leading conductors in the country. It’s going to be a fantastic concert and the start of a program that will touch many young musicians.”

Tickets are $10 at the Broward Center Box Office, BrowardCenter.org. For more information, go to PrideWindEnsemble.org.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – On June 12, 2011, the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble will mark their 25th anniversary with a special concert at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in the Amaturo Theatre. Founded in 1986 with just six members in a band member’s living room, the then-named Flamingo Freedom Band was born. Since its inception, the band has been entertaining audiences throughout Florida.

In the past two years, the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble has joined with the Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus and Ft. Lauderdale Women’s Chorus to form South Florida Performing Arts. This parent organization has helped all three groups grow by collaborating on concerts, producing one season-long concert program, recruiting monthly giving donors, and selling season ticket subscriptions.

Each year the wind ensemble performs two major concerts at the Broward Center and appears

at several pride events throughout the state. This year will mark their second year going on a tour of Florida’s west coast with the Ft. Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus to raise funds for local charities in Naples and Sarasota.

“Our Anniversary Concert will celebrate 25 years of great music and great collaborations. We are going to pull out all of the stops on this one. Our audience will be treated to our usual fantastic visual effects, guest musicians and other entertainers and, of course, amazing music,” commented Dan Bassett, artistic director.

Tickets are now on sale through the Broward Center box office by calling 954-462-0222 or online at www.browardcenter.org/sflpridewindensemble.

DAN BASSETT:

A LIFE OF MUSIC Recently, local musician and conductor, Dan Bassett was named by the Miami Herald as one of twenty local artists under the age of forty who are already making an impact in the arts in South Florida. Only four of the artists chosen were musicians and Bassett was the only gay-affiliated artist.

Bassett has been the conductor of the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble, based in Fort Lauderdale, for five years. Recently I caught up with Bassett to talk about their upcoming 25th anniversary concert. The band’s concert will be held on November 6 and is titled “The Classics” and will also feature a holiday concert on December 15 with the Pride Jazz Ensemble and the Fort Lauderdale Women’s Chorus.

In Bassett’s words “expect to be incredibly entertained with some of the most challenging music we’ve performed. I am so proud of the Wind Ensemble … prepare for a fantastic evening.” The event will once again be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

In addition to the wind ensemble, Bassett also conducts the South Florida Pride Jazz Ensemble and Marching Band.

Among Bassett’s biggest accomplishments was a national conference of gay and lesbian bands in New Orleans in the fall of 2009. As artistic director he conducted a 180 piece concert band and coordinated the first Lesbian Gay Band Association (LGBA) Honor Jazz Ensemble with sixtime Grammy Award-winner, Gary Burton as guest soloist and John Mahoney of Loyola University as conductor.

In addition to conducting, Bassett is also an accomplished trumpeter. He has been a featured soloist with the Singing Sons Boychoir, Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, MCC Sunshine Cathedral and South Florida Wind Ensemble. As church musician, he spent fourteen years at the MCC Sunshine Cathedral as trumpeter and instrumental coordinator.

Sold Out Show Concludes 24th Season

By DMITRY RASHNITSOV

Like a She BOP wrap from Rosie’s, sometimes it’s easy to forget how good the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus really is. But just because these boys have been tooting their vocal horns for 24 years, doesn’t mean that they have lost any of their steam.

On Friday June 25, more than 60 members of the group performed their final show of the season, “Feeling Groovy” a high energy concert with clips from over 70 songs from the 1960’s.

Gay Men’s Chorus Director Todd Wiley led his merry band of misfits through renditions of songs originally sung by The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel and The Beach Boys. The group also put together a section of nostalgia, singing favorite TV themes from the 1960’s including “Gilligans Island”, “The Andy Griffith Show” and “The Munsters”.

This was also the first season that the South Florida Pride Wind Ensemble led by Artistic Director Dan Bassett accompanied the Gay Men’s Chorus. The bringing together of so many talented singers and musicians into one show is exactly why the Parker Playhouse, a venue that holds several thousand, was overflowing with applause, laughs, cheers and standing ovations during the entire show.

The Gay Men’s Chorus is taking a break until their holiday show next season, but rumor has it that they are teaming up with a well known Broadway and television actress and “fag hag” next season to present their very own original musical.

Until then, the Gay Men’s Chorus is looking for people to help them out with donations, so the shows can continue to be an amazing representation of their community.

The group has put together a “Director’s Circle” club for those that are interested in donating between $500-5,000. Some of the perks include free tickets to shows, free parking passes, invitations to VIP receptions and the chance to get face time with Todd Wiley!

For more information about the group or to donate visit: www.fortlauderdalegaymenschorus.org.
