“Drag Bar Crawl” Comes to South Beach

Tags: , ,

MIAMI BEACH – Four South Beach establishments will host the first “Drag Bar Crawl” fundraiser in support of Miami Beach Gay Pride on Thursday, October 25. The Drag Bar Crawl begins at 8 p.m. at Palace Bar, 1200 Ocean Drive, with drag superstar Tiffany Fantasia presenting the “Best Float” award from the 2012 parade to Borinquen Medical Center of Miami. At 9:30 p.m., the progressive party will move to Mova Lounge, 1625 Michigan Avenue, for the Pride Volunteer Appreciation Hour.

After Mova, crawlers will proceed to Score, 727 Lincoln Road, at 11 p.m. for a video showcase from the parade and festival held in April. The Drag Bar Crawl will then culminate at Twist, 1057 Washington Avenue, at 12:30 a.m. “It’s important that the community comes out to support Miami Beach Gay Pride for this first fundraiser of the season,” said Babak Movahedi, chairman of the Pride Board of Directors. “Pride is an event produced by the community, for the community, and to keep the event free and to keep the event growing each year requires a great deal of operating capital from donations.”

Miami Beach Gay Pride has grown into the largest, single-day event of the year in the City of Miami Beach. In April, it attracted more than 60,000 people. The 2013 event, which will be held from April 12 to 14, will be its fifth annual.

Redefining South Beach Expectations – Rosa Mexicano Sobe

A Festive Atmosphere & Award-winning Mexican Cuisine

Rosa Mexicano South Beach
1111 Lincoln Road, Miami, Florida
305-695-1005

Situated at the west end of Lincoln Road in the 1111 building, Rosa Mexicano South Beach provides a warm and vibrant setting for award-winning authentic Mexican cuisine. The illuminated electric-blue tiled water wall features an intriguing array of illuminated figures and candles set among cascading water that brings a vibrant and seductive feel to the main dining room.

Warm terracottas and yellows enhanced with colorful accents are featured throughout the restaurant as well as traditional, one-of-a-kind Mexican crafts, fabrics and artwork. This combination creates the perfect backdrop for the festive atmosphere and innovative Mexican cuisine of Rosa Mexicano.

Rosa Mexicano was originally guided by the vision of Chef Christian Plotczyk and Culinary Director David Suarez. All of the award-winning Rosa Mexicano dishes remain faithful to their traditional roots while incorporating regional accents and inspired innovation.

You’ll experience that first hand when you try the Pomegranate Margaritas ($9.75) or Guacamole en Molcajete ($14.00), made in a traditional lava-rock mortar and prepared tableside.

When the first Rosa Mexicano location opened in 1984, New York Magazine applauded them for introducing New Yorkers to a “hitherto unfamiliar, elevated version of Mexican cuisine.” Most recently they redefined expectations in South Beach with authentic Mexican cooking in a stylish space and festive atmosphere. On a recent visit we started out with Flautas de Pollo ($9.00), three rolled crispy chicken tacos with salsa pasilla de Oaxaca, salsa verde, queso fresco and crema. For our main courses we enjoyed the Filite con Hongos ($28.50), a filet Mignon covered with a wild mushroom and tequila cream sauce and the Chile Ancho Relleno ($22.50), two ancho chiles stuffed with slow cooked marinated pork served over a black bean sauce and marinated red onions. Having thoroughly enjoyed dinner we pressed on and for dessert we loved the Churros Rellenos ($7.50), hot Mexican doughnuts filled with caramel and raspberry sauces, dusted with sugar and cinnamon and served with chocolate sauce for dipping!

Collins Avenue to welcome gay hotel

Tags: , , ,

SOUTH BEACH, Fla.

South Beach was once the gay capital of South Florida, and a new hotel opening on Collins Avenue is hoping to bring some classiness back to the gay scene on the party island. Lords South Beach Hotel, 1120 Collins Ave., is scheduled to start catering to guests Nov. 21. With 54 rooms, three pools, two restaurants and a bar, Lords South Beach is attempting to be an all-encompassing property that guests only leave when they want to go to

the beach. They are also offering an in-house social network, where guests can connect with each other and plan dinner reservations. “We are thrilled to bring this exciting hospitality concept to South Beach; our goal is provide a liberal, proud, playful experience for guests,” said Founder Brian Gorman. “We hope that Lords South Beach will raise the bar for what the discerning gay traveler can expect from a hotel.” Lords is also pairing with popular gay hotspot Crunch Fitness to offer free gym access to its guests. One of the hotel’s more unique concepts is that they pledge to donate 10 percent of all profits to charity. Depending on which room a guest stays in, the three charities that will receive money include Care Resource, Point Foundation and the Hetrick-Martin Institute. Care Resource is a local charity that assists people with HIV, while Point Foundation and Hetrick- Martin Institute are national charities that provide education resources for LGBT students. If you stay there, make sure to check out the “Stay Naked” in-room dining option
