Orlando LGBT Activists: “Orange County Mayor Won’t Support Partner Registry”

Tags: , , ,

After the City of Orlando past a domestic-partner (DP) registry last year, gay rights advocates in Central Florida were hopeful that Orange County would follow suit. But now, activists say that Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs is wavering in her support of the ordinance which would allow for visitation and  other medical care rights as well as  end-of-life rights and protections for unmarried couples, gay and straight.

“We are in the process of doing legal review and analysis, and when we’ve completed that I will come to the board,  if I’m able to, with a legally sound proposal,” Jacobs offered. “And regardless of what I come with, board members have an opportunity and freedom under my administration to offer counter proposals.”

Activists met last month with Jacobs, raising concerns at that time about her commitment to enacting a county-wide registry. In a follow up to that meeting, they wrote to the mayor, “You stated that you cannot support a Domestic Partnership Registry.”

In an email to Jacobs sent last week, attorney and gay rights proponent Mary Meeks confirmed their worst fears. “Now it is crystal clear that we were right to be worried, and the DP registry is in peril, and apparently has been in peril for quite some time,” Meeks wrote.

“We are further concerned that a political consultant with questionable intentions and a documented history
of anti-gay activism appears to be guiding you in this matter,” wrote Michael Slaymaker, the founder of the Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee, in an email concerning John Dowless, who consults for Jacobs’ campaign and is the former executive director of the Florida Christian Coalition.

Jacobs said that Dowless’ role is not as all-sweeping as activists fear. “He’s not advising me on gay-rights issues, and he’s not advising me on this issue right now,”the mayor said.

Partner Registry Push In Orange County

Tags: , , ,

ORLANDO, FL – LGBT activists in Orange County, Florida have increased pressure on Mayor Teresa Jacobs to acknowledge the positive reviews for a proposed county-wide domestic partner registry.

Some fear Jacobs may be planning to oppose it.

Organizers plan to flood Jacobs with personal stories, adding to the positive feedback she has received from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie, and members of her own legal staff.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, the registry, which was approved by Orlando leaders last month, doesn’t carry the legal weight of a marriage or civil union, but it bestows a handful of rights in certain situations, such as allowing visitation at a hospital or to make funeral arrangements after a loved one’s death. Supporters are eager for the county to offer a similar provision.

Advocate.com Rates its 2012 “Gayest Cities in America” Washington State Lawmakers on Opposite Sides of Same-Sex Marriage

Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

By Rory Barbarossa

The Advocate.com has published its third annual rankings of the gayest places in America. The authors utilized a self-described “subjective criteria,” based in no part on official U.S. Census Bureau data, to arrive at the “per capita queerness” of some of the America’s cities and towns.

Fort Lauderdale made the rankings, coming in at “Number 4,” in an equation that included such categories as the number of LGBT elected officials within the community, the density-per-area of LGBT bookstores–and nude yoga classes, whether a locality offers protections to transgendered persons, and the

number of International Mr. Leather competition semifinalists who live there, among other criteria, which was then “divided by population within city limits.”

The Advocate.com editors distinguished “Fort Lauderdale” from surrounding communities, specifically citing “Wilton Manors” by name, although the number of gay-centric activities and events would be sparer, indeed, if the Island City and neighbors like Oakland Park are excluded from any accounting.

Making the Top Ten were some surprise entries: Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, Michigan (at “Numbers 6” and “10,” respectively), and Knoxville, Tennessee (“Number 8”), although the authors explain the logic behind their selections, including whether or not a city includes a WNBA franchise.

Orlando also made the list, arriving at “Number 2” through a combination of being host city for Gay Days at Disney World on the first Saturday in June, offering more gay softball teams than any other locality, and the city’s recent domestic-partnership protections ordinance, among other things “queer.”

Rounding out the rankings was a perhaps surprising grand prize winner, Salt Lake City, Utah, which finished at “Number 1.” While citing such cultural icons of the Beehive State as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the listings also point out SLC’s over “half-dozen hot spots for men and women, including the eco-friendly nightclub Jam (JamSLC.com),” as well as the internationally-renowned Sundance Film Festival, which offers many annual LGBT film selections. The authors also note this often-overlooked fact about the city-that-polygamy-built: contrary to popular wives tales about Utah, Mormons, and a state that by law doesn’t permit happy hours, “you can get a drink in this town.”

The Parliament House A Venue of Frolics, Fun and Follies

Christian Alexander

I was in desperate need of some time off. But where to go on the spur of the moment? The Parliament House in Orlando sprang to mind (as did Tahiti, but I’m on a budget now) to take in the shows, do a little dance, make a little love and basically “get down” all weekend seemed to be in order.

I informed the front desk that I would be doing a story for the Florida Agenda and had the good fortune to be given
the name of the man who could facilitate my needs, Mr. Michael Wanzie, the Theatrical Producer/Sales and Events Coordinater. He is the wizard behind the curtain that helps make the Foot Light Theatre more enjoyable than a trip to Oz.

I was given the full “red-carpet” treatment. Michael took time out of his whirlwind schedule to give me a guided tour of all the amenities and was just an all-around pleasure to meet. I came to refer to him as the “go to guy.” He also, in his capacity of Event’s Coordinator, is in the process of putting together his very own spoof of “A Christmas Carol.” If you have a free weekend, I highly recommend it.

Everyone at the Parliament House is friendly and welcoming, I am, however, going to focus on three people who made my stay just a little more extraordinary.  I would like to thank the entire staff for an incredible weekend – with a special note to theFootLight Players, all of whom are an absolute inspiration. The cast has all been there several years and work together with the efficiency of a Broadway production.

It was my misfortune to have missed the legendary talent of Darcel Stevens, the usual Mistress of Ceremonies, but my great pleasure to witness the tornado of talent that embodies the form of Carol Lee. It bears mentioning that both Darcel and Carol Lee have been with the theatre for approximately 12 years and yet I still noticed something of a family environment backstage, which I believe helps set them apart from other shows.

Now unto Carol Lee and myself. At some point between shows, Carol Lee took the time with me to sit down and talk, and I grew more fond of her as we spoke.

Having grown up in the small town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, she knew that she always “marched to the beat of a different drummer” as she graciously put it,from an early age. We chatted about this and that, her incredibly hectic schedule of seven different shows (I still can’t even imagine that) each weekend as well as her day job (which I will not mention here, but is quite impressive).  When I inquired as to what made her do it all, she simply stated (with a somewhat sly look on her face), “a girl’s got to eat and it’s not like I’m out digging ditches. I’m playing with make-up and putting on a dress.”

When I asked her what her inspiration for entertaining was, we had a bit of an “Oprah” moment. She tried holding back some tears and told me the story of her Grandmother. This amazing woman was apparently the strength from whom Carol Lee draws her and she told me her Grandmother had a favorite quote. “If I had made it to Hollywood first, no one would have ever heard of Ethel Merman.” After having sat down with Carol Lee, I believe that to be absolutely true.

And then there is that Master of Mixology, Derek. At some point during the blissful madness of the weekend, I chanced upon yet another heart of gold.  I’ll admit, I was first drawn to his looks. But as we conversed, I found him to be intelligent, witty and especially kind.  He works in the Bear Den–not my usual choice, but hey, it was a vacation and it was right next door to the antique shop (which, is an absolute MUST).

My best friend and I quickly laid claim to the pool table and I would go up to chat with Derek between games and order more cocktails. We actually got to know each other a little bit, and he was absolutely amazing! He has been with the Parliament House for about 2½ years and had nothing but good things to say about it. He pours a mean cocktail once he knows what you like. A word of caution: look, but don’t touch, girls. He’s off limits for the time being!

When all was said and done, I had the most exquisite time that’s allowed by law and I suggest you treat yourself to a good time as well by venturing up to the Parliament House. Between the live entertainment and the more than delicious staff, a good time is had by all – guaranteed.

Dyer Criticized Over Gay Rights

ORLANDO, FL – Opponents of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer came out swinging against his reelection to his post last week.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, mayoral candidate Mike Cantone called on Dyer to adopt gay-friendly legislation that would apply to companies doing business with the City of Orlando. Further, Cantone blamed Dyer for not moving quickly enough on a proposed domestic partnership registry. Dyer is pushing a measure which would make it easier for gays to make decisions affecting their partners. The city already offers domestic partner benefits to its own employees, a measure approved since Dyer was elected mayor, but Cantone said the city must do more.

Orlando Pride Postponed

ORLANDO, FL – Last weekend’s “Come Out with Pride” Orlando Gay Pride celebration at Lake Eola was postponed due to inclement weather. Orl ando Pride w

ants to assure the community that they are working feverishly to set a new date for the big event. They released the following written statement:

“First, it takes a few people at the city level to look at the open dates at the park but also, on a larger scale, in the whole downtown area. The Orlando Police Department, for instance, only has so many officers it can detach to an event so if there are too many events happening in one day, the city council can’t approve the permit. Lake Eola, which is home to Orlando Pride, is also very booked. This means choices are scarce. Right now, we want to thank everyone at the City who are working extra hard at making this happen as soon as possible.”

GOP Debate: Gay Soldier Booed

Tags: , , , , , , , ,

ORLANDO, FL – At the recent Fox News/YouTube Republican Debate held in Orlando, the audience booed a video submitted by Stephen Hill, a soldier serving in Iraq concerning the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

In the question directed at former Senator Rick Santorum, Hill asked: “Do you plan to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?”

The audience at the debate then booed the military man.

Santorum answered: “Any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. And the fact that they are making it a point to include it as a provision within the military – that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege, I think tries to inject social policy into the military and the military’s job is to defend our country. We need to give the military, which is all volunteer, the ability to do so in a way that is most efficient and protective of our men and women in uniform and I believe this undermines that ability.”

Debate panelist Megyn Kelly asked a followed up question: “So, what would you do with soldiers like Stephen Hill now he’s out?

What would you do as president?”

Santorum responded: “What we’re doing right now is playing social experimentation with our military right now, and that’s tragic. Going forward we would reinstitute that policy….”

Neither Santorum, any of the other candidates, nor the debate panel addressed the disrespect the audience gave to Hill.

The next day on Fox News, Santorum did say: “I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country.

I thank him for his service to our country. I’m sure he is doing an excellent job. I hope he is safe.

I hope he returns safely, and does his mission well. I have to admit I seriously did not hear those boos. Had I heard them, I certainly would have commented on them.”
