MIAMI GARDENS – Equality Florida and other LGBT rights groups are opposed to the candidacy of Miami Gardens Mayor Shirley Gibson, who is a candidate for the Miami-Dade County Commission, District 1 seat. Gibson says that if she is elected, she will review the county’s human rights ordinance, which protects LGBT residents from discrimination in work and housing, and granting other rights.
According to Equality Florida, Gibson’s “commitment to do a ‘cost review’ isn’t simply a vague threat. Miami-Dade County has a long history of enduring attacks on LGBT equality led by extremist far-right groups like the Christian Family Coalition. When Gibson committed to place gay and lesbian rights up for review, she signaled to all anti-equality voters that she was standing with them.”
