DJ TPROMIX Celebrating 25 Years Behind the Turntables

Tags: , , , ,

By ALEX VAUGHN

Cire Citron, the Creative Director behind Johnny’s Nightclubs, is a name that keeps coming up in conversation. Most interestingly, many people don’t realize he has a rather long history as alter ego DJ TPROMIX. We dug a little deeper to uncover the secrets of his success and how reaching a milestone twenty-five years behind the turntables feels.

Where did you get your start?

Wow, many moons ago, I was just a young boy with a fake ID trying to befriend a DJ at the largest club in Washington DC called Tracks.

I got really lucky one night and was asked to fill in for the VJ room. It was a very bumpy ride. I learned in front of people and fast!

From there, I moved to New York City and eventually played every major venue available. Hey, did you hear that the legendary Limelight Disco (former church turned nightclub) was purchased by IHop to become its new 24-hour Manhattan location in 2012… times have changed!

DJing in New York at all those big clubs in the magic era of house music, you must have a good story or two?

It was a great time period, so much uninhibited dancing. I do miss people going out to actually hear music they don’t know! We used to love that. I mean if I just wanted to hear the radio, I already have a radio. That’s not why I go out!

Being able to DJ for Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, Bette Midler, Lil’ Kim, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson… I have been blessed.

And you have remixed for many big names as well.

Everyone from Arthur Baker and Beyoncé to Michael Jackson and Niki Minaj.

I even worked on a couple of TV/Film Project remixes for the  Celluloid Closet, MAD TV, Star Wars, and the one that started it all, Wonder Woman. Yes, that remix was me.

I get emails and requests daily for one particular track. My mix of Masters At Work’s The Ha Dance. That one’s still getting sampled.
The list is long, I plan on uploading a lot of the really rare tracks to Sound Cloud soon for my fans.

What brought you to Miami?

Having such great success in NY with my MILK party, which ran for eight years and then Cuchifrito at SPLASH, which ran for six years under my helm and is still running as OCEAN, there wasn’t really a way to top myself. I started traveling back and forth to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, DJing at Coliseum here for a couple of years before I finally moved in 2005, did several events for Score, Sizzle and Space… I just love the weather. The winters in Manhattan can be brutal.

How did you get the coveted position of directing all of the Johnny’s boys?

(Laughs) I kept crossing paths with owner Sean David. It turned out, we have similar nightclub visions and work well together. It is a dream job in many ways, like things have come full circle. I do love DJing, but creatively I have always done all of the photography, graphics and advertisements for my events as well. It feels good when someone desires your participation in making their venue a success.

But you know what feels best? Seeing the vision become reality. We are very grateful that so many people are loving Johnny’s as much as we do.

Are you ready for your birthday parties?

Always prepared for a party… and in this case, three!

You can catch up with DJ TPROMIX and join him in celebration at the following events:
Thursday, October 20 at Torpedo in Fort Lauderdale for the six year anniversary of Tastee.
Friday, October 21 at Johnny’s in Fort Lauderdale for the 2DayBday part 1.
Tuesday, October 25 at Johnny’s in Miami for the 2DayBday part 2.

To find DJ TPROMIX on the web, facebook or twitter, just search “TPROMIX.” There’s only one!

Johnny’s Celebrates 31 Years

Tags: , ,

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Johnny’s is celebrating 31 years in business Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 22 through 24.
Johnny’s originally opened with a beer and wine license only as Johnny’s Village Inn in 1980 and was located in what is now the Riverwalk section of downtown Fort Lauderdale right behind what was then Backstreet/Ft. Lauderdale, the sister establishment of the famed Backstreet/Atlanta. Due to the redevelopment of the area and the creation of Riverwalk in the mid-1990s, owner Johnny Moses moved Johnny’s to its current location, then known as the Glow Lounge, obtained a full-liquor license and shortened the establishment’s name.

The 31st anniversary celebration will honor Uncle Al who has been working at Johnny’s for the past 25 years.

To celebrate this milestone, Johnny’s will be featuring free drinks and hors d’oeuvres from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., $3 Chambord Vodka cocktails, 60 house dancers performing nightly starting at 6 p.m. and free admission if you bring a copy of their ad from Mark Magazine or the Florida Agenda.

Pride Center Expands Efforts to Reach GBTQ/MSM with Addictions

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The Pride Center at Equality Park, in association with Lambda Men’s Brotherhood, have created a new social networking program

called Youth Gay Meth Free (YGMF). YGMF caters to the young GBTQ men in South Florida who struggle with crystal methamphetamine addiction – commonly known as “Crystal,” “Tina” or “Ice” – along with other substances.

YGMF is currently available on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, with the goal of grabbing the attention of young GBTQ males with these tragic addictions.

“I’m very excited about this new program because there are so many young men struggling with additions,” said Mitchell Jerus, Youth Coordinator running the YGMF Program. “We already have much of our online social networking programs in place and very soon we will have a peer counseling program both online and offline.

“These young men often feel alone with no one to talk to about their problems,” continued Jerus. “That’s why we’re here, so they know they’re not alone and that someone is there to help. We anticipate this program will be very successful and we’re using the slogan ‘Get Your Shine Back’ showing these young men that they can emerge from their dark places.

“Numerous indicators confirm problematic crystal methamphetamine use among some sexually active men who have sex with other men. GBTQ/MSM young people’s questions regarding sexual identity and sexual behavior need to be addressed. These young men need skills to address and resist using substances as they become exposed to new behavioral options in the gay community.”

“In my experience catering to LGBTQ youth and their families, many of the young men I’ve met that use crystal meth are young sex workers: dancers, go-go boys, adult film performers, escorts, etc.,” said Listron “Blue” Mannix, Expanding Testing Initiative Manger overseeing the YGMF program.

“We’re reaching out to other organizations that can help this program flourish and become the hope for a better future to others that it’s supposed to be,” concluded Jerus. “We feel that by collaborating with programs such as Meth and Men, the Sunserve Youth Group, MProject and other treatment centers, that young men struggling can get the help that they need and deserve.”

The core of this program is located at the Pride Center at Equality Park on Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, or by going online to Facebook and looking for “YouthGay MethFree”.

For additional information, email youthmethfree@pridecenterflorida.org or call (954) 463-9005.

Teacher Suspended for  Being Gay Porn Star

MIAMI, FL – In January, Shawn Loftis, a Miami-Dade County substitute teacher, was suspended from his position. In April, Loftis’ teacher’s certificate was revoked despite his insistence that his porn days were over.

Loftis also worked as a citizen reporter for CNN.

Loftis, who went by the stage name Collin O’Neal, resigned his porn career in 2010 but is still widely known for his porn work. His video work included Mirage, Lord of the Jungle, Humping Iron, Crossing the Line, Rising Sun, Desperate Husbands, Scorched, The Hard Way, Mo’ Bubble Butt, Perfect Fit and Skuff II: Downright Filthy.

However, Loftis/O’Neal also produced and directed his own series, known as “World of Men,” where, as O’Neal, he visited various exotic locations looking for sex. These locations included London, Lebanon, São Paulo, Miami, Spain, Edinburgh, Berlin and Serbia. O’Neal’s videos not only served as sex films, but were also travelogues showing some of the famous sites in the various cities. It is from these locations that, as Loftis, he submitted some of his iReport segments for CNN.

O’Neal’s hard-core performances won him several awards. The “World of Men” series has been nominated many times for awards and World of Men: Lebanon has won a GayVN Award for Best Pro/Am Release and a Grabby Award for Best Videography jointly for Collin O’Neal and Dan Fox, again for Lebanon.

O’Neal said that CNN knew about his porn past and didn’t have a problem with it, but can’t believe that the Miami-Dade School Board would, since he gave up the business.

They are Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, whose unique styles transformed the movie musical; Donald O’Connor and Sammy Davis, Jr., both geniuses who had to struggle for appropriate recognition; Bobby Darin, who made the leap from ‘50s pop-star to sophisticated concert artist; the eccentric, brilliant Anthony Newley, whose pulsating, emotional style reverberated throughout the musical theater world; and, of course, George M. Cohan, who invented the song and dance man.

“I wanted to remind people of just how good it can be; of how magical the world of show business was in those golden days because of these performers,” says Peterson about why he was motivated to create the one-man show. “The dazzling talent and charisma of these artists inspire life-changing devotion.”

Tonight (Thursday, April 28, just hours away from the real wedding), Rosie’s commands the attendance of every Queen, Princess, and Lady-in-Waiting from 7 to 11 p.m. for their faux wedding rehearsal dinner, which will include an Ugliest Bridesmaid Dress Contest, hosted by entertainer Joe Posa performing as Joan Rivers.

Although Prince Wills and Lady Kate will be decked out in their finest (and veddy British) duds, the Lords and Ladies of Rosie’s mandate that guests attending the Rehearsal don ugly dresses, big wedding hats, and whatever passes for your “crown jewels.” And while a Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll earlier this year found that 65% of Americans said they could care less about the Royal Wedding, clearly none of them lives in the gayborhood, where the world’s largest concentration of Queens and wanna-bees may be found.

Rain Man Can’t Dance,  But He Is An Excellent Driver

Miami is poised for the grand opening of Johnny’s Club, Bar & Lounge’s new location South of the (Broward) Border and, while Open for Business has it on the best authority that impresario Sean David is pulling out all the stops to bring hot dancers, great music and a VIP vibe to the Magic City, in spite of what you may have read elsewhere, there’s no apparent truth to the rumor that he is employing the best “autistics” money can buy. On the other hand, we hear that the sound system will be kicking – taking full advantage of the venue’s superlative acoustics. Is there a Copy Editor in the house?

Gary and Reece’s Peaces

An interesting exchange between Wilton Manors Mayor Gary Resnick and Reece Darham, owner of Island City Health & Fitness (ICHF), during the April 20 General Meeting of the Rainbow Business Coalition (RBC) of Greater Fort Lauderdale: Darham, who serves as the chair of RBC, had just complimented and thanked Wilton Manors officials for waiving city license and permitting fees for the upcoming Consumer Trade Show in Hagen Park, which the gay business and community group is sponsoring as part of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association‘s (IGLTA) 28th Annual Convention, coming to Greater Fort Lauderdale May 10 through 15. Darham, feeling waggish, enquired of His Honor if the city would likewise suspend fees for the June 19 Stonewall Wilton Manors Street Festival and Parade and the Halloween-themed Wicked Manors in October. The mayor’s rejoinder: would the fitness club owner be willing to waive gym membership fees at ICHF for city employees in exchange for this consideration? Less than a beat later, Darham responded in the affirmative, to the applause of the fifty-plus RBC members and guests in attendance.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the Children of God.” Matthew 5:9.

Little Nicky’s Knows the Bear Necessities

One of the area’s newest Italian ristorantes, Little Nicky’s, knows that a growing Bear (or Cub, or Otter) needs to eat, and they have a menu that will please the most voracious Kodiak appetite. Less than two months old, their Dixie Highway and Commercial Blvd. location (two doors down from Publix on the northwest corner) is jumping with a crowd that means business when it comes to il mangiare.

Little Nicky’s has a terrific ambience and a welcoming atmosphere, whether one is mezzo-soprano or Tony Soprano. Owners Jeffrey and Bobby (one of whom is gay, the other very gay-friendly; we leave it to you to figure which is which) offer free delivery to all places in the gayborhood and parts beyond, and if you’re in training for Bear Nation, Open for Business recommends their Hungry Bear Special, which includes two of their signature 16” cheese pizzas, two salads (even a Grizzly has to watch his mid-section on occasion), 12 garlic knots, and a two-liter of soda for $19.95. Leave room for dessert? Yeah, right.
