FORT LAUDERDALE – On June 27, the Broward County Health Department implemented a comprehensive HIV testing outreach campaign, to help reverse a startling trend which has made South Florida “ground zero” as the number one U.S. region for rate of new HIV infections.
Officials hope that the new “Broward is Greater Than AIDS” campaign will publicize this startling statistic, and help to decrease the rate of new infections. The campaign will reinforce the department’s ongoing efforts to encourage Broward County residents to “Know Your Status,” as well as the status of their sexual partner.
The campaign—launched to coincide with National HIV Testing Day on June 27— includes a number of resources designed by health officials to encourage and increase HIV testing, decrease the rate of new HIV infections, and reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 21%—or more than one-infive— of adult Americans with HIV are unaware they have it.
