LONG BEACH, CA – In honor of the city’s gay pride celebration this week, the City of Long Beach, California, has decided to name a park located on the beach after former San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk. The name change was proposed by City Council-man Robert Garcia who is openly gay. All other members signed on to the name proposal except for one, Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske, who is openly lesbian, saying she preferred to name the park either “Unity Plaza” or “Human Rights Plaza”.

HOLLYWOOD, CA: Actor James Franco has announced that he is not gay though he has no problem playing gay roles. He told People Magazine, “In this history of cinema, there are so many heterosexual love stories. It’s so hammered, so done. It’s just not that interesting to me. It’s more interesting to me to play roles and relationships that haven’t been portrayed as often.” In his newest movie, Howl, he plays poet Allen Ginsberg. The movie opens on September 24. In 2008, he portrayed Harvey Milk’s lover in the movie Milk and a swimmer who is attracted to older men in the 2002 film, Blind Spot. Next, Franco is scheduled to star in the 20th Century Fox remake of Planet of the Apes.
