GOP Debate: Gay Soldier Booed

ORLANDO, FL – At the recent Fox News/YouTube Republican Debate held in Orlando, the audience booed a video submitted by Stephen Hill, a soldier serving in Iraq concerning the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

In the question directed at former Senator Rick Santorum, Hill asked: “Do you plan to circumvent the progress that has been made for gay and lesbian soldiers in the military?”

The audience at the debate then booed the military man.

Santorum answered: “Any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. And the fact that they are making it a point to include it as a provision within the military – that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege, I think tries to inject social policy into the military and the military’s job is to defend our country. We need to give the military, which is all volunteer, the ability to do so in a way that is most efficient and protective of our men and women in uniform and I believe this undermines that ability.”

Debate panelist Megyn Kelly asked a followed up question: “So, what would you do with soldiers like Stephen Hill now he’s out?

What would you do as president?”

Santorum responded: “What we’re doing right now is playing social experimentation with our military right now, and that’s tragic. Going forward we would reinstitute that policy….”

Neither Santorum, any of the other candidates, nor the debate panel addressed the disrespect the audience gave to Hill.

The next day on Fox News, Santorum did say: “I condemn the people who booed that gay soldier. That soldier is serving our country.

I thank him for his service to our country. I’m sure he is doing an excellent job. I hope he is safe.

I hope he returns safely, and does his mission well. I have to admit I seriously did not hear those boos. Had I heard them, I certainly would have commented on them.”

“Glee” Star Trashes Fox News

LOS ANGELES, CA – According to the Huffington Post, “ Glee”

star Jane Lynch took shots at News Corp and Fox News at the recent D9 Tech Conference despite her and the conference’s contractual allegiance to News Corp. Lynch portrays Sue Sylvester on the Fox network’s hit show, Glee. She also took shots at Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

Lynch made the introductory speech at the conference and, in so doing, used her popular Sylvester persona in which she has won an Emmy award. The D9 Conference is put on by All Things Digital, which is also owned by News Corp. Lynch pretended that Sylvester was acting CEO of News Corp and was making changes while the actual News Corp CEO, Rupert Murdoch, was out of the country.

“I’m launching a Fox News investigation into the young and fresh face cast of ‘Glee’” she said, joking about Fox News’ coverage of President Obama’s birth certificate. “I have some inside information and I don’t believe one of them are real Americans. I’ve also convinced Glenn Beck to stay on at Fox for one final gig – as a dying patient on ‘House’ — with a horrendous malady. His sickness is consuming him from the inside out.”

She then went on to Palin:

“I’m pretty sure we got Sarah Palin to do a guest spot on ‘Glee’. She’ll perform an original tune I penned: ‘Look at Me, I’m Batshit Crazy”.

CALL TO ACTION:

Demand that Bill O’Reilly & FOX News Apologize for
Comparing Gay People to al Qaeda

On the June 2 edition of Fox News Channel’s “The O’Reilly Factor,” host Bill O’Reilly made highly offensive comments while discussing a gay themed McDonald’s advertisement currently airing in France.

After playing the ad for his viewers O’Reilly asked Jane Skinner to weigh in on the content. Skinner pointed out that the ad campaign is “part of an overreaching campaign called ‘come as you are,’ which you saw at the end there.

So they show people in different walks of life.” O’Reilly then asked, “Do they have an al Qaeda ad, you know, come as you are? You know?”

Instead of evaluating the commercial in a fair manner, O’Reilly used the occasion to defame the LGBT community, suggesting that McDonald’s might begin marketing to terrorists simply because the company produced a gay friendly television commercial. His lighthearted tone in the segment was equally disturbing.

Cable opinion programs like “The O’Reilly Factor” have a responsibility to cover issues with a level of respect and civility.

Bill O’Reilly failed to live up to that standard in making these defamatory remarks. Fox News Channel is equally accountable for allowing O’Reilly a platform for this insulting and irresponsible commentary.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Please contact Fox News Channel and voice your concerns about Bill O’Reilly history of verbal attacks on LGBT people including this latest incident of comparing the gay community to al Qaeda.
