THE CUBBY HOLE: A Butch Little Local Landmark http://floridaagenda.com/2012/09/12/the-cubby-hole-a-butch-little-local-landmark/ http://floridaagenda.com/2012/09/12/the-cubby-hole-a-butch-little-local-landmark/#comments Wed, 12 Sep 2012 12:56:44 +0000 FAdmin http://floridaagenda.com/?p=16305 By Dale Madison

Once upon a time, there was a legendary little watering hole near Sears Town called Lester’s Bar (it had first been called SyLa’s, after the original owners, but it underwent a name change in 1949). Around 1990, the landmark lounge was purchased by a customer, John Hitchcock (who was a big fan of the joint’s freshly-made hamburgers). Re-christening it the Cubby Hole, Hitchcock was the steward of the heritage establishment for 15 years before deciding to put it on the market.

Enter Teri Galardi and Gary Edmiston. “We looked at large clubs in Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale, and Oakland Park,” recalls Edmiston. “We heard about Cubby Hole, so we stopped in to have a drink and check the place out. We really liked it, and so we put the wheels in motion, and next thing you know Teri bought the place.”

There was a lot to attract Galardi and Edmiston to the location. “We really liked the ‘friendly, local watering hole.’ We wanted the bar to be laid back, comfortable feel,” explains Edmiston. He acknowledges there were concerns when they first over. “Local drug dealers were hanging out in the back alley. Teri started going to city council meetings, and we spoke to the local police about more patrols. We also installed more security cameras.” Eventually, the bad element got the message that they weren’t welcome.

Despite those changes for the better, some things have stayed exactly same— including the bar’s reputation for great food (including the burgers that helped “give birth” to it). “Our burger is 1/3-pound of fresh ground sirloin,” Edmiston justifiably brags. “I personally go out and purchase the sirloin every day. Every Friday is hot dog day, so many times I will make a Sloppy Joe sauce to go on the dogs. We really try to show our customers that they are number one to us,” he adds.

“We also have the longest happy hour in town. Seven days a week and customers can use their [free drink] chips anytime. Our philosophy is you should be able to use that chip when you want to use it,” says Edmiston.

Edmiston’s emphasis on service and quality date back to his days in uniform, military and culinary. “In 1975, I left the United States Air Force and joined Big Boy Restaurants. I was a manager for years,” he remembers. “I then went to work for a private club in Las Vegas, and then became Assistant Executive Chef at Vegas World Casino.” In Las Vegas, Edmiston began his professional association with Galardi.X

“I went to work for Teri at the Back Door Club, which was one of the largest gay clubs in Vegas. It was typical for us to have 500 patrons on any given night. Then Teri and I found Cubby Hole, and this has been home for me for the past three years,” says Edmiston. “I’ve had one day off in that time,” he adds with a smile, “but this has been a labor of love, so it makes it worthwhile.”

The Cubby Hole Bar is located at 823 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. For more information, visit thecubbyhole.com, and tell Gary and his staff that you read about them in Guy Magazine.

Stonewall Museum Partners with Broward Public Schools, Unveils 1949 ‘Gay’ Letters Collection http://floridaagenda.com/2012/07/25/stonewall-museum-partners-with-broward-public-schools-unveils-1949-%e2%80%98gay%e2%80%99-letters-collection/ http://floridaagenda.com/2012/07/25/stonewall-museum-partners-with-broward-public-schools-unveils-1949-%e2%80%98gay%e2%80%99-letters-collection/#comments Wed, 25 Jul 2012 18:54:25 +0000 FAdmin http://floridaagenda.com/?p=15462 FORT LAUDERDALE – The Stonewall National Museum and Archives is partnering with the Broward County Public Schools to present a symposium in February 2013, called “The Kids Are Not All Right,” which is intended to bring together the ten most progressive school districts in the country to develop an LGBT curriculum for grades K through 12. Museum officials also note that a recently donated private collection includes a delicate booklet published in 1949, called “Private Letters from Homosexuals to a Doctor.”

The book was assembled by D. O. Cauldwell, M.D., from his correspondence with LGBT persons who lived at the time. In his introduction, Dr. Cauldwell admits that, “regardless of the study I’ve made of Sexology, any homosexual in the United States, male or female, can tell me a great deal more than I know about homosexuals and homosexuality.” In its 32 pages, the gay correspondents present often conflicting perspectives, formed by their personal experiences.

One well-bred writer—the very “out” son of a prestigious family—brags about having had sex with most of the men and boys in his town—and having taught some of the local wives how better to please their husbands. He told Cauldwell, apparently without irony, “Homosexuals sometimes cry for equal status, for a homosexual society, for communities where they may carry on their alliances, and even for marriage laws.

“They’d be cutting one another’s throats as to who would be known as the Mister and who the Mistress. Under such social conditions most homosexuals would become heterosexual or impotent. I dare say the latter. Quite a few of them would go nuts. The homosexual’s one great reason for existence is his field of conquest.”

Broward Health Department Launches HIV Testing Outreach Campaign http://floridaagenda.com/2012/07/18/broward-health-department-launches-hiv-testing-outreach-campaign/ http://floridaagenda.com/2012/07/18/broward-health-department-launches-hiv-testing-outreach-campaign/#comments Wed, 18 Jul 2012 16:51:46 +0000 FAdmin http://floridaagenda.com/?p=15342 FORT LAUDERDALE – On June 27, the Broward County Health Department implemented a comprehensive HIV testing outreach campaign, to help reverse a startling trend which has made South Florida “ground zero” as the number one U.S. region for rate of new HIV infections.

Officials hope that the new “Broward is Greater Than AIDS” campaign will publicize this startling statistic, and help to decrease the rate of new infections. The campaign will reinforce the department’s ongoing efforts to encourage Broward County residents to “Know Your Status,” as well as the status of their sexual partner.

The campaign—launched to coincide with National HIV Testing Day on June 27— includes a number of resources designed by health officials to encourage and increase HIV testing, decrease the rate of new HIV infections, and reduce the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. An estimated 21%—or more than one-infive— of adult Americans with HIV are unaware they have it.
