NEW YORK, NY – Former Vice President Dick Cheney has been hitting the talk show circuit recently hawking his new book, “In My Time.” Cheney, who appeared on the ABC show “The View” last week with his wife Lynne, restated his stance in favor of same sex marriage, a stance that goes against his loyalty to the Republican Party. Mary Cheney, daughter of the former Vice President, is openly lesbian.
Barbara Walters asked Lynne Cheney what she thinks of gay marriage. After explaining that her daughter Mary is partnered with Heather Poe, Lynne Cheney said, “I think that whatever Mary and Heather decide to do is up to Mary and Heather.”
Walters: “So, you’re not against gay marriage.”
“That’s right,” said Cheney.
“Do you agree with that?” Joy Behar asked the former Vice President.
“Yes,” answered Cheney. “I think freedom means freedom for everybody and you ought to have the right to make whatever choice you want to make with respect to your own personal situation.”
The former Vice President dodged a question on whether he believed that same-sex marriage should become a federal law. Cheney has publicly supported marriage equality for more than two years now. In June 2009, at an appearance at the National Press Club, he said that he thought it should be handled on a state-by-state basis.
