Founder Blames Gay Rights Progress

BY ALEX VAUGHN

Fab.com, the gay social network that launched originally as Fabulis.com, has closed after its founder said that advances in gay rights mean there is less need for a gay version of Facebook.

Facebook made changes to their relationship status options two weeks ago to include civil and domestic partnerships.

The website began as a sort of gay Foursquare-style game based around users’ Facebook connections. It then evolved to a gay version of Groupon.

Jason Goldberg, its founder, wrote in an honest and pointed blog post explaining the decision: “Gay rights progress over the past year had a positive impact on the gay community but a negative impact on the demand for our services.”

He went on to list the significant developments for gay rights in the US: “With developments like the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the court victories over California’s Proposition 8 gay marriage ban, the Obama administration’s tacit rejection of the Defense of Marriage Act, and the anti-bullying ‘It Gets Better Project’ continuing to integrate gays into the mainstream, we saw a diminished need for a gay Facebook or a gay Yelp or a gay Foursquare or a gay Groupon.”

He added that there is a larger market for well-designed products, the focus of the next incarnation of Fab.com, than there is for a gay-orientated online venture.

While Fab.com managed to gain more than 140,000 registered users, other social networking platforms are growing much faster.

One of the most significant growth areas is Gay mobile networking applications such as Grindr and BoyAhoy, both have grown extremely, particularly in the UK.

This week Grindr launched on the Android platform and is testing for a Blackberry App.

Writing on PinkNews.co.uk’s comment section, Mr Goldberg explained:

“I do not believe at this point that there is legitimate demand for a non-sexual social network for gay men that would garner more than 1M members. And if you can’t get to 10M members, it’s hard to build a significant business in this space.”

Facebook Adds New Options to User Profiles

PALO ALTO, CA – Social networking giant, Facebook, added “civil union” and “domestic partnership” to options in setting up user profiles.

“Today, Facebook sent a clear message in suppor t of gay and lesbian couples to users across the globe,” said Jar rett Barrios, President of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). “By acknowledging the relationships of countless loving and committed same-sex couples in the U.S. and abroad, Facebook has set a new standard of inclusion for social media. As public support for marriage equality continues to grow, we will continue to work for the day when all cou- Facebook Adds Ne w Options to User Profiles ples have the opportunity to marry and have their relationship recognized by their community, both online and off.”

In October 2010, Facebook partnered with GLAAD and other national LGBT organizations to create a “Network of Support,” an educational initiative that works to combat anti-LGBT cyber-bullying. GLAAD also worked with Facebook to reshape the way that the site responds to hateful, anti-LGBT comments posted on public pages.

Facebook claims over 600-million users worldwide.

Editor’s Letter: A rose by any other name…‘Domestic Partnership’ and ‘Civil Union’

Facebook announced last week that they had updated their systems to allow relationship status to include ‘Domestic Partnership’ and ‘Civil Union’. There is no question attitudes towards official gay partnerships are changing in the US. Every day there is a new debate into accepting ‘gay marriage’.

In England we have Civil Partnerships which afford same sex couples all of the rights of straight married couples. The difference is solely in the name. Marriage.

From what I see one major stumbling block here and globally for that matter, is the view that marriage is only possible in the eyes of God as a religious union between a man and woman. Now whether we agree with that or not, should the question really be what we call it or the rights at stake?

If Civil Partnerships were to be brought into the US in the same format they follow in the UK. Same sex partners will be afforded key rights; immigration, health benefits, inheritance, tax and many more. Surely it is better to achieve the rights then the official name of marriage.

Many activists claim we should have equal use of the word. Perhaps they are correct, but the cost of fighting this point is preventing the importance of same sex unions from coming to the fore. Obama has stated that he, ”supports full civil unions and federal rights for LGBT couples and opposes a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage” as well as saying, “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman. For me as a Christian, it is a sacred union. You know, God is in the mix.” So by that very position he is fundamentally against the word ‘marriage’, not the union.

Let’s just take a moment to think here, if the biggest issue is the word… Change it. Once a Federal law is in place that allows a union, the foundation has been laid for continued change. Just this past week in the UK the government announced steps are being taken to allow Civil Partnerships to be blessed in houses of worship. The new laws do state that each house of worship can opt out if they choose. However this is all going in the right direction. Civil Partnerships were brought into the UK in 2005 so in six years we are already creating a dialogue with the religious sects, who are notoriously against same sex partnerships.

America has no reason to stumble and to not follow suit. More and more states are changing their position on the issue, however I am sure by dropping the word ‘ marriage’ we could speed it up. In fact public opinion to same sex unions has grown. An August, 2010 Associated Press poll found growing support for allowing same-sex marriage in the United States. 52% of respondents answered the federal government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex (46% in 2009), 46% was against (53% in 2009). If we take into account that removing the word ‘Marriage’ would undoubtedly enhance the position, it really becomes evident that to raise more support the battle is really about one word.

How much signifance does that one word have? In Europe where civil partnerships are recognised the powers that be don’t call it marriage. Sure it would be nice if we could call it marriage, but in order to get the the rights, the party, the celebration and the union of love recognized, surely it is worth giving on that one issue. When you are in a bar or meeting new people, you can still call your partner your husband or wife, and in your eyes and legally they will be your official partner just like a heterosexual husband and wife.. The FBI won’t parachute out of the sky to arrest you for not referring to each other as civil partners. Elton John calls his civil partner, David his husband. I have met couples here in Florida who have no union or official stamp and have been together for 20 years refer to each other as husbands or wives.

Americas’ attitude to gay rights is generally on an upswing, with Don’t Ask Don’t Tell being repealed, and the country is slowly moving towards allowing couples to be joined. Now is the time to get creative, to push further. Take advantage of our growing support and take each milestone and continue to build upon it.

As of 2010 Domestic partnerships are recognised in Miami Dade and Broward counties, so we have a benchmark to start deciding what additional rights we need to make that a full partnership. Think about some unique campaign ideas and put them out there. ‘No H8’, The California based campaign against Proposition 8 is coming to Fort Lauderdale in mid March. Go and have a picture taken. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8″ painted on one cheek in protest. I will be there and so should you to show that here in Florida we stand up l as one of the biggest Gay meccas in the world.

Drop ‘ Marriage’ out of the equation until we have the rights, then call it whatever you like, after all it will still smell as sweet.

In South Florida, Broward County School Board Chairwoman Jennifer Gottlieb fought to have the district honor National Day of Silence, the day that GLBT students use to peacefully protest anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) bullying, harassment, and name-calling. Gottlieb’s former near equivalent in the Midland School District in Pleasant Plains, Arkansas, however did not feel the same way.

“I would disown my kids they were gay,” wrote former Midland School District Vice President Clint McCance on his Facebook wall. “They will not be welcome at my home or in my vicinity. I will absolutely run them off. Of course my kids will know better. My kids will have solid Christian beliefs. See it infects everyone.”

McCance was angry because people he didn’t know on the internet were asking him to wear purple to help bring attention to the five gay teenagers who committed suicide in September after being bullied and harassed by classmates. “Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers killed themselves,” McCance wrote in his original ‘sin’ Facebook post. “The only way I’m wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide.”

Six people “liked” McCance’s Facebook rant and some commentators actually agreed with his statement. Other’s challenged his words.

McCance began serving on the school board in 2007. He was re-elected for another four-year term in September, but after what McCance told CNN’s Anderson Cooper was “thousands of phone calls, hate mails, people threatening to kill my family and me,” McCance abruptly resigned from his post, allegedly planning to lead a life of hatred and bigotry behind closed doors.

“I’m sorry I’ve hurt people with my comments,” McCance said. “I’m sorry I made those ignorant comments and hurt people on a broad spectrum. I’m reaping what I’ve sown. I’ve had a lot of hate speech thrown at me and my family on every level.”

The Arkansas Department of Education had said it was “dismayed to see that a school board official would post something of this insensitive nature on a public forum like Facebook.”

The Midland School District had also denounced the posting. “The district strives to foster an environment that discourages all forms of bullying,” it said in a statement this week, “and an environment that encourages a safe and productive educational climate [for] all of our students.”

McCance has sent his wife and kids out of the state because of fears for their safety and that said he is installing a security system.

No, because I’m not into it. I don’t need everyone knowing my whereabouts or business. I like to lead a private life.

Duh!
