“We are in the process of doing legal review and analysis, and when we’ve completed that I will come to the board, if I’m able to, with a legally sound proposal,” Jacobs offered. “And regardless of what I come with, board members have an opportunity and freedom under my administration to offer counter proposals.”
Activists met last month with Jacobs, raising concerns at that time about her commitment to enacting a county-wide registry. In a follow up to that meeting, they wrote to the mayor, “You stated that you cannot support a Domestic Partnership Registry.”
In an email to Jacobs sent last week, attorney and gay rights proponent Mary Meeks confirmed their worst fears. “Now it is crystal clear that we were right to be worried, and the DP registry is in peril, and apparently has been in peril for quite some time,” Meeks wrote.
“We are further concerned that a political consultant with questionable intentions and a documented history
of anti-gay activism appears to be guiding you in this matter,” wrote Michael Slaymaker, the founder of the Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee, in an email concerning John Dowless, who consults for Jacobs’ campaign and is the former executive director of the Florida Christian Coalition.
Jacobs said that Dowless’ role is not as all-sweeping as activists fear. “He’s not advising me on gay-rights issues, and he’s not advising me on this issue right now,”the mayor said.
Photo: Orange County Mayor Mayor Teresa Jacobs says she supports equal treatment under the law but her efforts toward Domestic Partner Registration may be slow to move forward if at all.
]]>Some fear Jacobs may be planning to oppose it.
Organizers plan to flood Jacobs with personal stories, adding to the positive feedback she has received from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, Orange County Comptroller Martha Haynie, and members of her own legal staff.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, the registry, which was approved by Orlando leaders last month, doesn’t carry the legal weight of a marriage or civil union, but it bestows a handful of rights in certain situations, such as allowing visitation at a hospital or to make funeral arrangements after a loved one’s death. Supporters are eager for the county to offer a similar provision.
]]>According to the Orlando Sentinel, mayoral candidate Mike Cantone called on Dyer to adopt gay-friendly legislation that would apply to companies doing business with the City of Orlando. Further, Cantone blamed Dyer for not moving quickly enough on a proposed domestic partnership registry. Dyer is pushing a measure which would make it easier for gays to make decisions affecting their partners. The city already offers domestic partner benefits to its own employees, a measure approved since Dyer was elected mayor, but Cantone said the city must do more.

The bad weather, due to a tropical depression over Central Florida that weekend, produced nineteen hours of heavy wind and rain during that weekend and the Orlando pride organization decided to postpone the event to a later date instead of a total cancellation.
Other official pride events are being rescheduled, such as the Official Pride Brunch, around the new date. Disney is also back on board for a second shot. According to a written statement by Orlando Pride officials: “Please remember that sponsors and vendors alike spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to mobilize units, staff and in the case of Disney, huge audio equipment for our event.
The fact that all have agreed to come back to Pride on November 13 is a testament to their dedication to our community, our cause and our celebration!”
However, in another statement, Orlando Pride wrote: “We have a challenge for you. By having to cancel the event on Saturday October 8 (and to re-schedule it to November 13), we have incurred over $15,000 of expenses. While some vendors will be assisting us by reducing or even waiving their costs for TAKE TWO, others are unable to do so and bills are due regardless. Event insurance only covers so much (and is another high expense we can’t get our money back for). SO WE NEED YOUR HELP! If each one of our fans was to give ONLY $2 (less than a cup of coffee or an ATM fee or a toll), we would be all set! We are working on fundraisers but we need your help now!”
To make a donation to help cover the expenses of changing the date for “Come Out with Pride,” visit www.comeoutwithpride.com/donate.php.

ants to assure the community that they are working feverishly to set a new date for the big event. They released the following written statement:
“First, it takes a few people at the city level to look at the open dates at the park but also, on a larger scale, in the whole downtown area. The Orlando Police Department, for instance, only has so many officers it can detach to an event so if there are too many events happening in one day, the city council can’t approve the permit. Lake Eola, which is home to Orlando Pride, is also very booked. This means choices are scarce. Right now, we want to thank everyone at the City who are working extra hard at making this happen as soon as possible.”

Pride Center Expands Efforts to Reach GBTQ/MSM with Addictions
FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The Pride Center at Equality Park, in association with Lambda Men’s Brotherhood, have created a new social networking program
called Youth Gay Meth Free (YGMF). YGMF caters to the young GBTQ men in South Florida who struggle with crystal methamphetamine addiction – commonly known as “Crystal,” “Tina” or “Ice” – along with other substances.
YGMF is currently available on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr, with the goal of grabbing the attention of young GBTQ males with these tragic addictions.
“I’m very excited about this new program because there are so many young men struggling with additions,” said Mitchell Jerus, Youth Coordinator running the YGMF Program. “We already have much of our online social networking programs in place and very soon we will have a peer counseling program both online and offline.
“These young men often feel alone with no one to talk to about their problems,” continued Jerus. “That’s why we’re here, so they know they’re not alone and that someone is there to help. We anticipate this program will be very successful and we’re using the slogan ‘Get Your Shine Back’ showing these young men that they can emerge from their dark places.
“Numerous indicators confirm problematic crystal methamphetamine use among some sexually active men who have sex with other men. GBTQ/MSM young people’s questions regarding sexual identity and sexual behavior need to be addressed. These young men need skills to address and resist using substances as they become exposed to new behavioral options in the gay community.”
“In my experience catering to LGBTQ youth and their families, many of the young men I’ve met that use crystal meth are young sex workers: dancers, go-go boys, adult film performers, escorts, etc.,” said Listron “Blue” Mannix, Expanding Testing Initiative Manger overseeing the YGMF program.
“We’re reaching out to other organizations that can help this program flourish and become the hope for a better future to others that it’s supposed to be,” concluded Jerus. “We feel that by collaborating with programs such as Meth and Men, the Sunserve Youth Group, MProject and other treatment centers, that young men struggling can get the help that they need and deserve.”
The core of this program is located at the Pride Center at Equality Park on Dixie Highway in Wilton Manors, or by going online to Facebook and looking for “YouthGay MethFree”.

Teacher Suspended for Being Gay Porn Star
MIAMI, FL – In January, Shawn Loftis, a Miami-Dade County substitute teacher, was suspended from his position. In April, Loftis’ teacher’s certificate was revoked despite his insistence that his porn days were over.
Loftis also worked as a citizen reporter for CNN.
Loftis, who went by the stage name Collin O’Neal, resigned his porn career in 2010 but is still widely known for his porn work. His video work included Mirage, Lord of the Jungle, Humping Iron, Crossing the Line, Rising Sun, Desperate Husbands, Scorched, The Hard Way, Mo’ Bubble Butt, Perfect Fit and Skuff II: Downright Filthy.
However, Loftis/O’Neal also produced and directed his own series, known as “World of Men,” where, as O’Neal, he visited various exotic locations looking for sex. These locations included London, Lebanon, São Paulo, Miami, Spain, Edinburgh, Berlin and Serbia. O’Neal’s videos not only served as sex films, but were also travelogues showing some of the famous sites in the various cities. It is from these locations that, as Loftis, he submitted some of his iReport segments for CNN.
O’Neal’s hard-core performances won him several awards. The “World of Men” series has been nominated many times for awards and World of Men: Lebanon has won a GayVN Award for Best Pro/Am Release and a Grabby Award for Best Videography jointly for Collin O’Neal and Dan Fox, again for Lebanon.
O’Neal said that CNN knew about his porn past and didn’t have a problem with it, but can’t believe that the Miami-Dade School Board would, since he gave up the business.

KEY WEST, FL – Island House Key West, touted as the longest continuously operated gay guesthouse in the world, is celebrating its 35th anniversary in business and its 10th anniversary under its current owners, Jon Allen and Martin Kay, who transformed it into a leader among the world’s premier gay guesthouses.
To mark this milestone, Island House is offering all 39 rooms at $13, the price it charged when it opened in 1976, for the night of June 25, 2012. The special offer is available exclusively through a special sweepstakes. 39 winners will be chosen randomly among those who complete the entry form at http://apps.facebook.com/sweepstakeshq/contests/141910. Sweepstakes participants are also encouraged (but not required) to “like” Island House Key West at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Island-House-Key-West-Gay-Hotel-Resort/56402142064 and post a comment with the phrase “35 and fabulous.” The offer is valid through midnight on Labor Day (September 5, 2011).
Island House Key West began operating as a modest, 16-room all-men’s guesthouse in 1976. When Allen and Kay took possession in the late ‘90s, the ramshackle 39-room guesthouse sprawled languidly across several dilapidated buildings, sorely in need of repair.
“We are honored to have served more than 125,000 guests in more than a third of a century,” said Allen, “”We’ve never rested on our laurels. We pride ourselves on our focus on customer satisfaction and professional, attentive service. We’ve invested well over two and a half million dollars since purchasing the property.”
After a massive investment of capital and time, they unveiled the new and much improved Island House Key West in 2001, transforming it into Key West’s most luxurious and pampering oasis for men. Having spent so much on award-winning upgrades over the past decade, Island House is unmatched in its class.
