On Saturday, June 26, the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce will present its Ninth Annual Gala Awards Celebration at the Hilton Miami Downtown Hotel, 1601 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. The cocktails and silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m., grande buffet begins at 7:30 p.m, and the awards celebration begins at 9 p.m. with dancing shortly afterwards.
The 2010 award recipients are: the AT&T Business of the Year Award – Morgans Hotel Group; The Wachovia (a Wells Fargo Company) Business Person of the Year Award – Steve Rothaus (the Miami Herald); the Non-Profit Organization of the Year Award – Safe Schools South Florida and The Grey Goose (a Bacardi Brand) “Blue Diamond” Award – George Neary.
The Chamber GALA Awards Celebration traditionally attracts the “Movers & Shakers” in the South Florida GLBT and Allied business community as well as representatives from most community service organizations. The GALA is well known for the exclusive Silent Auction, which includes donations from many area restaurants and retail establishments. In addition to raising money for the Chamber, the auction provides an opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products and services to the community.
This annual event is MDGLCC’s principal fundraising effort, and moneys raised help sustain operations and the ever increasing demand to expand our growing programming.
The MDGLCC recently moved into a new office on Miami Beach that they hope will turn into a GLBT welcome center for all of South Florida. The Chamber has cancelled most of their monthly events in June to focus on the gala.
Tickets are $1,500 for VIP tables of 10 (valet parking included) and $95 for open seating (valet parking not included). Tickets are available by calling (305) 673-4440 or emailing mdglcc@bellsouth.net or online at: www.gogaymiami.com

Is your landlord refusing to fix your plumbing, your boss harassing you at work or is your car still broken after paying big bucks to be fixed by an auto repair shop? Instead of ranting or raving, learn about your legal rights on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at Humpy’s Pizza, in the Shoppes of Wilton Manors at 2244 Wilton Drive. The first session of what Humpy’s owners hope will continue for a long-term basis for what they also refer to as “Wilton Manors Law” Nites, begins Tuesday, June 8th.
“Everyone has at least one problem which they can use legal advice,” says Dennis Godfrey, a co-owner of the popular eatery which also has take-out and delivery service. “Gays and lesbians also have unique legal concerns involving wills, health care decisions and domestic partnership arrangements, so we thought ‘Advice by the Slice Nites’ would be a valuable service to the community,” Godfrey added.
Each Tuesday session will feature at least four attorneys working in different legal fields. “Some topics will be covered in more sessions than others, as we learn which issues draw the most questions”, according to attorney, Loring N. Spolter, who practices in the fields of Employment Law, DUI/Criminal Defense and School Law in downtown Fort Lauderdale, who is organizing the participating members of the legal panel. A former prosecutor in the Brooklyn, New York District Attorney’s Office and a native South Floridian, Spolter likes the concept of “making legal issues understandable and available to people at places they like to gather.”
There’s no charge to attend the sessions, though Humpy’s owners hope participants will want to satisfy their hunger and thirst while absorbing the legal knowledge being served. “Humpy’s is a convenient place to come to, to talk and to learn. I’m excited about starting a regular meeting place for the community,” Godfrey said. “Besides, unlike ‘Law and Order’ or ‘LA Law’, at Wilton Manors Law, it’s cool that you can ask questions and have them answered,” Godfrey noted.
