The Northeast Florida LGBT Leadership PAC has endorsed Republican Bill Bishop for mayor of Jacksonville and more than a dozen city council candidates who support LGBT equality.
The organization filed their paperwork with Duval County earlier this month and announced their picks on Feb. 24 at City Hall.
In addition to Bishop, the other candidates receiving the thumbs up are: Tracie Davis, Anna Brosche, John Crescimbeni, Tommy Hazouri, Greg Anderson, Ju’Coby Pittman, Michelle Tappouni, Joyce Morgan, Melody Shacter, Lisa King, Aaron Bowman, Ramon Day, James Eddy, Terry Fields, Garrett Dennis, Glorious Johnson, Joseph Willis, Abner Davis, Jim Love and Jason Tetlak.
Candidates were chosen based depending on where they stand on the issue of expanding the city’s human rights ordinance, group leaders said. The current ordinance covers housing, employment and public accommodations but does not provide explicit protection for people on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.
The city council rejected an effort in 2012 to strengthen the ordinance.
Earlier this month, the Florida affiliate of the Log Cabin Republicans also endorsed Bishop and city council candidates Brosche, Bowman, Anderson, Tappouni and Love.
