MIAMI — Miami-Dade police are treating the death of a local transgender woman as a homicide after her body was found in her Miami apartment on Sunday, Feb. 15.
According to a police spokesman, the death of Kristina Gomez, who was also known by her stage name, Christina Grant Infiniti, was originally classified as a suicide and details of when and how she died were not immediately available.
However, police did say they were pursuing several leads. No suspects were identified.
Terry Suarev, a lifelong friend who knew Gomez since Gomez was 17, said Gomez was in her 40s at the time of her death.
“She was a very funny yet private person,” Suarev said. “And a sister to the rescue.”
Suarev added that Gomez was an artist by trade, performing in numerous pageants and drag shows.
Friends and members of the LGBT community held a candlelight vigil for Gomez on Feb. 19 at the Torch of Friendship monument in Miami.
According to the non-profit unitycoalition.org, Gomez’ death comes at a time when there have been almost 10 similar incidents recently involving transgender women in the United States.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
