Dolphin Democrats Endorse Candidates in March Elections

Posted on 19 January 2015

WILTON MANORS–The Dolphin Democrats, Florida’s oldest LGBT political organization, has endorsed several candidates running for office in Broward County’s upcoming municipal elections on March 10.

“We believe that each of these dedicated public servants are strong advocates of not only the LGBT community, but of all people,” the group said in a statement:

  • Dean Trantalis is a former president of the Dolphin Democrats and the only openly LGBT member of the Fort Lauderdale Commission. Dean initiated a resolution in support of marriage equality that was adopted by the Fort Lauderdale Commission earlier in 2014.
  • Donna Guthrie is a member of the Dolphin Democrats. She is an advocate for LGBT equality alongside Dean.
  • Lori Moseley was the second mayor in Broward County to sign the “Mayors for the Freedom to Marry” Statement. She has always been an outspoken supporter of equal rights for the LGBT community, as well as other communities in her city.
  • Louis Reinstein has been a member of the Dolphin Democrats for several years, and is a strong supporter of equal rights for all marginalized communities.
  • Judy Paul also signed the “Mayors for the Freedom to Marry” Statement in 2012. She currently holds a Jamie Bloodworth Society membership in the Dolphin Democrats. Jamie Bloodworth was a strong advocate for LGBT and women’s rights. She died from breast cancer complications in 2005. Each year, a Jamie Bloodworth Award is presented to a woman who has shown leadership on LGBT issues from human rights to community well-being.
  • Ashira Mohamed signed the “Mayors for the Freedom to Marry” Statement and has promoted the rights of LGBT people in her work as an associate attorney at Rumrell, Bate, McLeod & Brock.
