Love & Carriage: KJ Hathaway & Lori Douvris

KJ and Lori live in the Poinsettia Heights neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. Lori is originally from Chicago and works as a project manager for a construction company. KJ is native Floridian from Fort Pierce and owns a hair salon. Ten years ago, they met while both were out on the town with friends, like two ships passing in the night KJ recalls, thinking, “I need her number.” And now, “a lot of our friends say they want what we have,” added Lori.

Like their friends John Duffy and Frank Sweeney who introduced them to the “wait-n-see game” of foster parenting, Lori and KJ got married just after midnight on Jan. 6. They took a four-hour marriage course at the local Metropolitan Community Church.

“I came out 16 years ago,” said Lori, who participated in a commitment ceremony with KJ five years ago. “We didn’t even think about kids. Or marriage. We were those crazy, wild partiers. It’s all different now.”

KJ, who always wanted to be a mother, said she and Lori are still adjusting to the painful process of having to return their months-old foster child to her biological mother, unconvinced mom has been rehabilitated enough for reunification with her daughter, reunification being the ideal scenario for a foster child.

Both are hopeful, however, that another opportunity to foster will come along. But in the meantime, they are having to wait and watch all of their tight-knit group of foster parent friends adopt children successfully.
