Leopold and Loeb, Morrissey, and Fire Island Disco: The Week 5/29-6/4

5/29
Thrill Me: The Leopold and Loeb Story

Before Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy, there was Leopold and Loeb. In the 1920s, University of Chicago law students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb met, became lovers, and then decided to commit the “perfect crime.” Influenced by Nietzsche’s Ubermenschen philosophy (suggesting that superior men, “supermen,” could rise above the laws bounding average men), Leopold and Loeb kidnapped and killed 14-year-old Robert Franks. After a sensational murder trial, both men were found guilty yet spared a death sentence. Numerous film and stage adaptations have depicted the two men’s relationship, including Hitchcock’s “Rope” and cult classic, gay indie film “Swoon.” “Thrill Me¬: The Leopold and Loeb Story” focuses on the obsessive relationship between the two men. Outre Theatre Company closes its season with this evocative musical. 8 p.m. Mizner Park Cultural Arts Center. 201 Plaza Real, Boca Raton, 33432.

Modeling and Bubble Gum

Bubble Gum Fridays

The Manor has never shied away from provocative performers or edgy entertainment. Tonight raises the bar with a special edition of Bubble Gum Fridays created by Wildchild World, a Miami-based production and design company. Wildchild World’s innovative “fantasy sideshows” include hundreds of performers, elaborate staging, and over-the-top costuming. At prior events like Ultra and Electric Daisy, Wildchild World gained recognition as one of the premiere production companies in South Florida. They have been written about in national magazines like Time, Huffington Post, and Life. Enjoy the spectacle as Manor says farewell to spring and welcomes the chaos of summer. 10 p.m. The Manor. 2345 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, 33305.

Model Mayhem

Modeling is still considered one of the greatest pursuits for a young gay male. What could be more flattering than being honored for your beauty? Model Mayhem, Sidelines’ competition to find the next great model, understands this priority. Model Mayhem is a 10-week competition dedicated to finding Fort Lauderdale’s next great gay model. 10 finalists will be chosen to compete for the grand prize: a one-year modeling contract. The winner will not only be Sidelines’ ad model but will also receive a professional photo shoot, the cover of Guy Magazine, and over $3500 in cash and prizes.  DJ Jason Gonzales spins from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. 2031 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, 33305

5/31
Morrissey and Catholic Controversy

Morrissey

The hipster king, Morrissey, has maintained his popularity for over 30 years, through many different changes in the music world’s landscape. He is also a major icon for the GLBTQIA community. Although Morrissey considers himself “humasexual” (or, attracted to humans, not gender), he has dated men in the past, including photographer Jake Walters. Hits from his stint as the lead vocalist for The Smiths include “This Charming Man” and “William, It Was Really Nothing.” His success continued as a solo artist with songs like “You’re the One for Me, Fatty” and “Suedehead.” Tonight he performs the greatest hits from his 30-year career with special guest Kristeen Young. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd. Miami, 33132.

Doubt

John Patrick Stanley’s famous 2004 play won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play. With a plot focused on a draconian nun (played by Meryl Streep in the film version) and a possibly pedophilic priest, “Doubt” explores themes of the importance of uncertainty and the Catholic Church’s sex abuse controversy. At fictionalized St. Nicholas Church School, a rigidly conservative nun named Sister Aloysius conflicts with the beloved and progressive parish priest, Father Flynn. She accuses him of sexual misconduct with the school’s first African-American student. A subsequent investigation suggests both Father Flynn’s guilt and innocence. 2 p.m. Delray Beach Playhouse. 950 Lake Shore Dr. Delray Beach, 33444.

6/1
Fire Island Disco

VooDoo Lounge’s legendary Sunday Tea Dance has been sorely missed for the past few years. Intriguing, new Fort Lauderdale drinking den Stache attempts to fill the city’s void with Sunday night’s Fire Island Disco. Stache is a 1920s-style drinking den, celebrating the art of mixology. Their expertly crafted signature cocktails combined with innovative burlesque and cabaret shows distinguish this business from Fort Lauderdale’s typical bars. Sunday night’s Fire Island Disco starts at 6:00 pm with Dj Scott Mann. A drag show hosted by Kitty Meow features performers such as Velvet Lenore and Deja Devonier.  6:00 p.m. Stache. 109 SW 2nd Ave. Fort Lauderdale, 33312.

6/2
Come on, Get Happy! Support Group

On Mondays, it’s more important than ever to be reminded of the joyous aspects of life. SunServe offers a support group dedicated solely to finding inner happiness. Psychotherapist Dr. Lewis Jordan teaches the group how to discover the ability and power inside to maintain and achieve happiness, harmony, and well-being. The doctor focuses on how beliefs affect different mood states, asserting that believing in happiness is the first step to achieving happiness. 7 p.m. SunServe. 2312 Wilton Dr. Wilton Manors, 33305.

6/3
