Gay Eagle Scout Wants Amazon to Cut Ties with BSA

Posted on 21 May 2014

Seattle, WA – A gay Boy Scout plans to deliver a petition with over 120,000 supporters to Amazon this week, asking that the company cuts ties with the Boy Scouts of America.

Pascal Tessier, a 17-year-old Eagle Scout, is asking Amazon to remove the BSA from its AmazonSmile program, which allows shoppers to donate 0.5 percent of their purchases towards a charity of their choice.

Tessier has pointed out that the AmazonSmile admission policy requires that eligible charities “do not engage in, support, encourage, or promote … intolerance, discrimination or discriminatory practices based on race, sex, religion, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, or age.”

Amazon appears to be standing their ground on the issue, even after GLAAD representatives contacted Amazon and referenced the policy.

Tessier plans to deliver the petition Wednesday to Amazon headquarters in Seattle, according to the Huffington Post. Tessier will be joined by GLAAD and Scouts for Equality.

The date also lines up with the opening of the Boy Scouts National Meeting in Nashville.
