Miami, FL – On May 14, a hearing will be held in Miami to discuss the lawsuit to overturn Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Mat Staver, chairman of Liberty Counsel, has filed a petition on behalf of three anti-gay groups that seek to defend the state’s constitution. Staver’s groups want to join the suit as defendants to stand up against Amendment 2, which is represented by six South Florida gay couples.
Gay rights attorney Mary Meeks will allegedly argue against the groups who are seeking to join the suit. Meeks also drafted the lawsuit, which was filed in January.
Staver argues that since same-sex couples cannot procreate, they should not be allowed to enter into a marriage.
“This is an area that has historically been regulated by the states,” Staver told the Orlando Sentinel. “I think that is a strong argument for Florida to be able to maintain the definition of marriage.”
Meeks’ argument is that using procreation as a purpose of marriage is irrelevant to the lawsuit, as heterosexual couples who cannot (or choose not to) have children would be banned from marrying as well.
