High School Student Discovers New Way to Test for HIV

Posted on 14 May 2014

In a new report on IFLScience.com, 15-year-old Nicole Ticea has supposedly developed an HIV test that allows a user to place a drop of blood on a microchip to receive a nearly instant result.

This new test tests for the actual virus, as opposed to current testing technology, which looks for antibodies.

The technology Ticea’s test uses is already in use for the diagnosis of several other diseases as well.

If approved, the Canadian student’s test could result in an earlier diagnosis and intervention with ARV treatment, which could in turn result in less new infections, as it diminishes the time between infection and detection.

The test itself is still a long way from widespread use, according to the report. The test would need to pass a far more thorough evaluation before commercial partners can even consider using it.

Ticea’s study goes to a national final next week, where two winners will be picked to go to the world final in San Diego in June.
