Becoming Dr. Ruth

Dr. Ruth Westhelmer is most famous for doling out advice to concerned, sexually frustrated couples. Her life story revolves around much more than just her profession, though. In “Becoming Dr. Ruth,” TV star Debra Jo Rupp (That 70’s Show) becomes Karola Ruth Siegel and tells the story of her complicated and action-packed life: from surviving the Holocaust to joining the Israeli Haganah as a sniper, to receiving her doctorate and becoming a household name as America’s favorite sex therapist. Straight from its critically acclaimed, New York run, “Becoming Dr. Ruth” plays tonight in Fort Lauderdale. 8 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Friday 5/9

Patti LuPone Wanted!

Patti LuPone—theatrical stage legend and recent Fort Lauderdale performer—has been the subject of many gay musical theater enthusiasts for a number of years. While LuPone embodies a diva-esque personality, she houses the voice and talent to back it up. Once during her much-heralded performance of Mama Rose in “Gypsy,” LuPone lashed out against the audience because they kept taking pictures of her. Because of all this hilarious drama, actors like Ben Rimalower adore Patti Lupone. Tonight, Mr. Rimalower performs his one-man show, “Patti Issues,” in which a young gay boy finds solace from his family turmoil in the transformative voice of Patti LuPone. The much-heralded play makes its debut in South Florida this weekend. 8 p.m. The Cabaret South Beach. 233 12th St, Miami Beach, 33139.

The Wanted

British boy band group The Wanted is cute, Disney-ready, and a tween girl’s favorite pop group. They had a mild hit two years ago with the radio-friendly Glad You Came. Recent hits include We Own the Night, All Time Low, and Gold Forever. They’ve been nominated for a multitude of Teen Choice Awards yet have come up empty-handed each time. With more time and effort at perfecting their craft, they may be able to finally win the highly coveted Teen Choice Award. 9 p.m. Filmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Saturday 5/10

Rob Schneider

Some may call him the poor man’s Adam Sandler, and there’s certainly a lot of evidence to support that claim (the films The Animal and Deuce Bigalow are mostly known for their plethora of Golden Raspberry Award nominations). Even so, Rob Schneider is a popular, stalwart entertainer. When not fighting with film critics (like the late Roger Ebert), Schneider spends his time performing stand-up, driving environmentally friendly cars, and outspokenly advocating against vaccination practices. Tonight, he entertains a South Floridian audience in West Palm Beach. 8 p.m. Palm Beach Improv. 550 S Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, 33401.

Thais

Ancient Egypt is the setting for this classic opera. In “Thais,” a beautiful and seductive courtesan is pitted against a virtuous and pious monk. Thanael, a Cenobite monk, tries to convert Thais to Christianity, but discovers too late that his obsession is rooted in lust. Jules Massenet’s masterpiece is described often as having a sort of religious eroticism. It includes the famous aria “Dis-moi-que je suis belle” and the moving orchestral “Meditation.” 7 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami Beach, 33132.

Sunday 5/11

Mother’s Day at Lips

This Mother’s Day, Lips offers something any accepting mother of a homosexual would enjoy—brunch and dinner with the DIVAS! For the dinner, Mom enjoys a complimentary glass of wine. If choosing brunch, deals on unlimited mimosas, champagne, and bloody marys will surely satiate a mother’s early morning quench for alcohol. While enjoying these delicious meals, a bevy of drag queens entertain with raunchy and pitch perfect imitations of everyone’s favorite gay icons. From Bette to Barbara, the show’s outpouring of love and cattiness never stops! 11 a.m. & 7 p.m. Lips. 1421 Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33334.

Monday 5/12

Beach Bear Weekend Closing Time

Beach Bear Weekend has been nuts, hasn’t it? So many incredible parties, there almost wasn’t enough time to fully recover before going back home. Thankfully, Rumors offers a Recovery Party at 5:00 PM. 2-4-1 cocktails and other discounts are offered all night long for guests showing their BeachBear ID Tag. Later a BigBear Bash at Ramrod and a closing party at 3-2-1 closes the weekend party. Thank you, one and all, for such an incredible weekend. 5 p.m. Rumors. 2246 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Tuesday 5/13

Electric Trash

Steve Trash takes the concept Going Green to a whole new level. Presented as part of the Broward Center Smart Stage Matinee Series, rockin’ “eco hero” Steve Trash will perform his signature world-class green illusions. Sponsored by Florida Power and Light, this show features an amazing mix of rockin’ music, astounding green magic tricks and hilarious eco-education guaranteed to make audiences laugh until their tummies hurt. In addition to being an award-winning performer, Trash is a dedicated activist and an active member of many environmental non-profit organizations, including the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Recycling Coalition. 10 a.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Wednesday 5/14

Men’s Life Drawing

It may have been a cheesy signal of romantic tension in the film “Titanic,” but drawing a nude model does have its appeal. For one, the artist is able to stare at a nude form for lengthy periods of time. For another, it’s interesting watching the model maintain said nude pose. Getting in touch with your artistic side isn’t all that bad either. All experience levels are welcomed at the Men’s Life Drawing classes, but remember to bring art supplies for both drawing and painting (including charcoal, pencil, or watercolor). Guest artists from the community will also be in attendance at this monthly event. 7 p.m. Push Fitness. 1098 NE 45th St, Oakland Park, 33334.

Would you be able to post the contact information for the Men’s Life Drawing sessions? It’s required to phone ahead of time. Thanks.

  2. George Dauphin says:

    Tom,
There is no phone number for this event. I was told that there is still room for both sessions, so you can walk in if you can’t send an email to reserve a spot.
