Fort Lauderdale, FL – After a juror’s alleged antigay comments about Mario Careaga were proven to be false, Careaga’s charges of DUI manslaughter were cemented.
Mario Careaga was found guilty of the DUI manslaughter charges against him last month and while Broward Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes released Careaga into his own custody, it was only a temporary reprieve after charges of jury tampering were alleged by an alternate juror at the end of the trial. Those charges were ultimately found to be untrue and Careaga was taken into custody awaiting appeal of his conviction.
Currently there is a sentencing hearing set for May 5 at 9:30 a.m.in Room 4750 of the downtown Circuit Court.
Careaga is expected to receive a sentence of between four and 20 years. Before the accident, Careaga was the Managing Partner of the Dennis Dean Galleries. Careaga’s public defender, David Bogenschutz, is rumored to be planning to appeal the verdict, although any indication that an appeal has been filed could not be confirmed.
