New York, NY – Over 50 protestors showed up to a demonstration on Saturday at the ATLAH Missionary Baptist Church in New York City, asking for Pastor James David Manning to stone them for their alleged sins.
The Harlem church recently updated their marquee to “Jesus Would Stone Homos,” and “Harlem Is a Homo-Free Zone,” according to a recent press release. After the marquee’s updated messages appeared, the sign was vandalized with a graffiti that reads “God Is Gay.”
The crowd arrived with a 40-foot-tall rainbow banner, shouting “Harlem queers under attack! What do we do? Act up!,” and other defensive chants according to the press release. Signs held by protestors included “God is love” and “Let he without sin cast the first stone.”
The organizer of the event, Harlem transgender activist Jennifer Louise Lopez, created the protest after she recently appeared at the church and asked an employee for her stoning, and subsequently did not receive any resolution to the conflict. The crowd of over 50 people that returned, were reportedly yelling “We’re here for our stoning!”
“[Manning] is a very hateful and dangerous man,” Lopez told the crowd according to the press release. “We will no longer stand by while Evangelical Christian churches misrepresent us.”
The report claims that Manning did not emerge at any point during the protest.
