Thursday 3/13

AIDS Walk Fundraiser

SunServe’s Housing Case Management Department is walking in the AIDS Walk and needs your help. No, you don’t have to walk with them, but you can spend 20 bucks and enjoy free food and entertainment down at Wilton Manors’ new favorite bar The Drive. From 6-8pm come enjoy a night out with friends while contributing to a cause you’re too lazy to participate in. The Drive’s disco lounge vibe contributes to its status as Wilton Manor’s hip new venue. A full bar and reasonably priced menu will help make this event a fun charitable experience. 6 p.m. The Drive. 2390 Wilton Dr, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Friday 3/14

Making Porn

The gay pornographic film industry is fertile ground for any dramatic work and Empire Stage tills that ground with their current production. In Ronnie Larsen’s cult play Making Porn, the lives of six people involved in the gay pornographic industry in San Francisco in the early 1980’s collide. Jack Hawk, a straight, out-of-work actor is hired by gay porn producer, Arthur Mack, to star in his newest porn movie Cops. The cast of supporting characters include Ray Tanner, a jaded porn star of the 70’s, newcomer Ricky, and Jamie—Arthur’s long time boyfriend and assistant who falls in love with one of the actors. The play contains nudity, which doubles as a warning and a marketing campaign. 8 p.m. Empire Stage. 1140 N. Flagler Dr, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Menopause the Musical!

If the porn industry isn’t your cup of tea, what about a whole musical revolving around an important, albeit difficult time in an aging woman’s life? Menopause The Musical is about four women who reminisce about their dilemma while shopping for lingerie at a Bloomingdale’s sale. They sing 25 songs about chocolate cravings, hot flashes, loss of memory, nocturnal sweats, and sexual problems. The music parodies include “Stayin’ Awake” and “Puff, My God I’m Draggin’.” With such catchy titles and such a hysterical plotline, what more could you ask for? 8 p.m. Parker Playhouse. 707 NE 8th St, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Saturday 3/15

A Mod Dance Party

Mod culture is back and better than ever. SunServe hosts a dance party unlike any seen in at least 40 years. Space Race, held at over-the-top venue The Sanctuary Church is a costume-optional dance and cocktail party. The night will feature DJ Julian Marsh spinning and a 1960s Space Race theme. Dress as your favorite astronaut or your favorite Laugh-In character. Either way your attendance will help benefit SunServe, a nonprofit that gives so much back to the LGBT community. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. The Sanctuary Church. 1400 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, 33304.

Night of Literary Feasts

The Broward Public Library Foundation needs money to keep all those wonderful shelves stocked full of books people, nowadays, can just read online. Their signature fundraising event, Night of Literary Feasts, takes place tonight at the Fort Lauderdale Marriot Harbor Beach Resort and Spa. The event features nationally known authors, including Dani Shapiro (Still Writing), Robin Cook (Cell), and everyone’s favorite dog killer John Grogan (Marley & Me). After hearing from the authors enjoy a cocktail reception, silent auction, and book signing. The night ends with intimate dinner parties with one or two elect authors hosted in private homes or upscale restaurants. 6 p.m. Fort Lauderdale Marriot Harbor Beach Resort and Spa. 3030 Holiday Dr, Fort Lauderdale, 33136.

Sunday 3/16

Smokey the Bear

Before it was a hit move about the death of Macauly Culkin (though not by heroin—bee stings), “My Girl” was a hit song sung by R&B icon Smokey Robinson. Throughout his illustrious career, Smokey has crooned his way to the top of the charts numerous times. “Tears of a Clown,” not to be confused with “Send in the Clowns,” shows that behind every jokester is a fragile heart. “I Second that Emotion,” finds a man incapable of saying “I Love You” outright. Smokey Robinson founded The Miracles back in the 1950s when he was still in high school. Tonight, he performs his hits in Miami. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

St. Patrick’s Tea Cruise

A tea cruise is like a little mini vacation; You board the ship, get settled in, enjoy the company of faces both new and old, and before you know it, you’re docking and the trip is over. This isn’t a bad thing. A day cruise is the perfect amount of time at sea, and the dancers from Johnny’s and Boardwalk will definitely distract you from any nautical anxieties. St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Monday this year, so Sunday is your opportunity to celebrate all things Irish. Sounds by Maximus 3000 and performances by Kitty Meow and Deja Devonier are sure to entertain starting the moment you set foot on the ship. For tickets, directions and additional information visit gayteacruisesfl.org. Boarding begins at 4 p.m. New River Smoker Park. 501 S New River Dr East, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

Monday 3/17

Everyone’s Favorite Holiday

The greatest holiday known to man (with a name to die for) finally arrives. We’ve spent a whole year waiting and it’s certainly going to be worth it. St. Patrick’s Day, better known as “That Amazing Holiday,” is a day for many celebrations. For one, it’s the day people celebrate the beauty of the name “Patrick.” Many people wish to have this name but only a select for (the chosen ones) are lucky enough to have been named Patrick. Others find celebrating Irish tradition a highlight of this holiday. Most, though, use St. Patrick’s Day as a day to drink green beer. Party hard at any number of bars throughout Wilton Drive. Don’t get too drunk, though, because throwing up green beer is nastier than you can imagine, and no one likes a Tuesday hangover. All day at various locations.

Tuesday 3/18

Rapper’s Delight

2 Chainz returns to Miami Beach’s Fillmore Theatre tonight. Grammy nominated and platinum-selling Atlanta rapper 2Chainz has been on a roll since his rap-R&B-pop crossover hit “Duffle Bag Boy” back in ’07. In 2010 he surprised the radio with the smash hit “Boo.” 2 Chainz’s buzz has reached fever pitch with such notable rappers as Busta Rhymes, Young Jeezy, and Pusha T all helping him on his musical “campaign.” Tonight he’ll bring the braggadocio and the rhymes. 8 p.m. The Fillmore Miami Beach. 1700 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, 33139.

Wednesday 3/19

Tyler the Creator

Tyler, the Creator’s 2013 album Wolf was one of the biggest albums last year. The alternative hip-hop crew Odd Future’s main rapper, producer, and source of inspiration got his name from a Los Angeles Times article about him when he was a 16-year-old skateboarding enthusiast. His bizarre and filthy material earned him a legion of followers back in 2010 when his video “French” took off, earning over a million views. His first album in 2011, Goblin, solidified his status as one of the hot young talents on the scene. Though his sharp tongue has been subject of many articles, the rapper defends his occasionally antigay slurs, citing his close friendship with openly-gay R&B singer Frank Ocean as proof, who was at one time a member of Tyler’s rap supergroup, Oddfuture. 8:30 p.m. Revolution Live. 100 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33312.
