Boca Raton, FL – Abdul Asquith was “appalled,” “embarrassed” and “distraught” after being denied a laptop at the Florida Atlantic University Wimberly Library last week, according to NBC. Asquith, an openly-gay male, was told that he could not check out a laptop because he did not look like the man in the picture of his school ID.
“She looked down at the ID, and said, ‘You sound, look, and act like a girl and in this ID is a man, therefore I’m not giving you a laptop.’ It looks just like me. I identify with my ID. I wasn’t there dressed up. I didn’t have on a dress. I wasn’t dressed in character.”
Asquith says that sometimes he wears feminine clothing, but on the day of the incident, he was wearing shorts and a hoodie with his hair pulled back.
Asquith eventually checked out a laptop after asking three different librarians to look at his ID card. The University has yet to issue a statement.
