Pinellas County, FL – In a vote of 6-1, the Pinellas County Commissioners voted to replace the word “sex” with “gender” in the county’s human rights law, providing additional protection to transgendered individuals, according to the Tampa Bay Times. The change, made last week, will give transgenders the same protections as everyone else, granting them freedom to be treated equally. Should a transgendered individual receive discrimination in the workplace or in housing, said individual would be able to protest and pursue legal action. Though it also allows them to use bathrooms assigned to whichever sex they identify with, take note that the law as a whole does not apply to religious groups, institutions, public schools or “businesses with fewer than five employees.”
