Condo Complex Doesn’t Allow Unmarried Gay Couples to Own Units

Posted on 25 August 2013

Venice, FL – A Florida condominium association is refusing to let unmarried couples purchase homes (whether they are homosexual or heterosexual) after revealing new restrictions that blocks couples “living in sin” from living in the complex. The rules at the Venice condo complex, Casa Di Amici, state that any couple defined as being in a domestic partnership would not qualify to own a home in the community, reports WTSP-TV. Gay realtor Julia Nowak (who rents her Casa Di Amici condo out to her parents) was shocked to discover the new rules of the community. “I could not believe what I was reading,” said Nowak. “It basically says you have to be either a single person or a husband and a wife to purchase a unit here.” Nowak also states that the new rule excludes elderly couples who do not marry to save on social security. While many believe the discriminatory clause is illegal, an lawyer with the condo complex says that no laws are actually being broken, as the city of Sarasota County doesn’t have a human rights ordinance.
