Smith College Improves: Creates A Transgender Policy

Posted on 26 May 2013

Northampton, NJ – After receiving harsh criticism for treating a prospective student with “hostility,” Smith College is now changing their ways. They are forming a committee to meet the needs of future transgender students, starting in September. In the meantime, any students who apply and list male as their sex on school forms and applications will not be turned away. GLAAD spokesman Wilson Cruz released a statement saying, “No young woman should be denied the opportunity to learn simply because of who she is. That Smith is having this discussion and listening to the community is a positive step, but the school still needs to ensure that no transgender woman is denied the chance to apply.” Debra Shaver, the dean of admissions, is now working to bring that goal to life.
