Mainstream comic books have received their first openly transgender character this week via the Batgirl series. The bisexual character reveals her big secret to Batgirl via a conversation in the newly released issue #19. Batgirl gives her an endearing hug and tells her she loves her. Writer Gail Simone told Wired.com that fans were the real reason behind the creation of Alysia. Simone questioned, “Why was this so impossible? Why in the world can we not do a better job of representation of not just humanity, but also our own loyal audience?” The audience was apparently heard, loud and clear.
