FORT LAUDERDALE — Responding to a call from Broward County Democratic Executive Committee (DEC) Chairman Mitch Ceasar for him to endorse marriage equality, Broward County Republican Executive Committee (REC) Chairman Tom Truex said that the traditional definition of marriage suits him just fine.
“I don’t want to seem alarmist,” said Truex, who was elected last week to head the county’s GOP, “but the definition of marriage is one that’s held up well for thousands of years, really since the beginning of history. It’s not something to change based on this year’s polls. It’s much more serious. Families are the most basic institution in all of civilization.”
My hat is off to Mitch Ceasar, the head of the Broward County Democratic Party’s Executive Committee, for his public support of marriage equality, and for his challenge to his Republican counterpart to join him in this support. Here are some excerpts from his letter:
“In the spirit of bi-partisanship, I ask you to join with me in supporting same sex marriages. I believe this is both a legal and human rights issue.”
After presenting several statistics and facts supporting gay marriage and adoptive and foster care rights, including citing an ABC poll “indicating over 80% of those voters under 30 support legalizing same sex marriage,” he concluded with:
“Tom, you are a loving and decent person. Please join me in this civil rights/human rights cause.”
KUDOS to Mitch Ceasar.
