FORT LAUDERDALE — A small engine aircraft crashed on March 15 in a parking lot located near Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. All three people on board were killed, and about a dozen cars were burned following the crash, which occurred within sight of I-95 during busy Friday afternoon rush hour.
Officials reported no injuries from persons who were on the ground at the time the plane—a two-engine turboprop Piper Navajo—crashed.
A spokesperson for Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler told the Agenda that the plane reported problems just after takeoff, and was in the process of approaching the airport when it crashed into a building, located about a half-mile east of the airport, near Powerline Road, and then into the nearby parking area.
Firefighters called to the scene had to extinguish the flames from almost a dozen cars, which the fire turned into charred wrecks.
