My decision to vote for a Republican goes far beyond what you claim – that I lack self-identity of am just being lazy. On the contrary, many of us spend a lot of time studying the real issues that are currently affecting our country, such as high unemployment, stand-still economic growth, a lack of leadership from both sides of our government (but
surely not the lack of ‘ruling’), the enslavement of people through the entitlement programs, encouraged class and racial warfare, and the decline of standards and morals, not to mention the intolerance and disrespect shown to each other on both sides.
I believe strongly that we are a nation of laws, not a nation of men. And when one man, or a group of men, take it upon themselves to pick and choose which laws they will uphold and which ones they will not, then we as a nation will become beholden to those men. Having said that, it is up to us, the American People, to choose representatives that will not only uphold the current laws, but will, through them, allow us, the people, to change the laws that we disagree with or that are no longer valid in the present day.
We must trust in our legal system. If, through that system, it is found that DOMA is Un-Constitutional (which I believe it is) then we have maintained the principles on which our country has been able to survive as one of the longest forms
of government.
One thing I have learned about the gay community is that for a group that demands tolerance for their rights they are one of the most intolerant groups when it comes to the rights and beliefs of others. Are we so weak that we must use harsh words, hatred, disrespect and demands to seek justice? Or are we strong enough in our beliefs and convictions that we can show tolerance and earn the respect of those who we so injustly accuse of hate towards us just because they believe in things that we don’t?
What I see from many in the gay community is that they are not educated on the issues that are affecting us all, but instead get their talking points from people like you and politicians who have a public platform. They rarely bother to take the time to learn what the other side of the issue is, and this, my friend, is what you like to refer to as ‘laziness’. To me, there are more important issues that we must address besides “gay marriage” because if we don’t, it won’t make a damn bit of difference if we are allowed to marry or not if we do not have an economically and safe country to live in.
