FERNDALE, MICHIGAN – Activists from eight Michigan gay-rights groups began a 100-day hunger strike this week, to draw attention to homophobia and inequality, as part of the Hungry4Equality campaign.
Strikers want to draw attention to the actions of anti-gay lawmakers, and legislation that would eliminate funding for Michigan’s public HIV programs, and anti-bullying campaigns.
“We’re trying to educate our straight allies about the extreme anti-equality government in this state,” activist David Garcia told reporters. Strikers plan to continue their campaign in a highly visible spot, located in a picture window that faces a main thoroughfare in downtown Ferndale, MI.
