New York Supreme Court Upholds Gay Marriage

Posted on 11 July 2012

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – On Friday, the Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court upheld the state’s Marriage Equality Act in a unanimous 5 to 0 decision. The ruling came after a challenge to the law by New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms (NYCF), a religious conservative group, who held that lawmakers and other elected leaders had violated the state’s laws requiring public meetings when they crafted the legislation.

After the ruling, Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-New York) said, “The court’s decision affirms that in our state, there is marriage equality for all, and with this decision, New York continues to stand as a progressive leader for the nation.”
