Hands Across the Bridge

Posted on 02 June 2011

PORTLAND, OREGON – Last weekend, over 4,000 people stood handin- hand across Portland, Oregon’s Hawthorne Bridge in a Facebook-organized demonstration against an anti-gay attack that took place on the bridge. According to Just Out, demonstrators packed into the space beneath the west side of the bridge at about 7:30 p.m. spilling over the ramp and stairs to hear from the survivor’s of the attack, Brad Forkner and Christopher Rosevear. Afterward, the crowd filed down both sides of the bridge with hands held. Despite being tightly packed, some attendees could not fit on the bridge.

Since the initial attack, volunteer patrols have begun on weekends from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the area. The patrols consist of four-person groups that keep a watchful eye for suspicious activity.
