COLUMBIA, SC – The Navy has dropped dismissal proceedings against Petty Officer Stephen Jones. Charges had been brought up against Jones for unprofessional conduct after he was found in the same bed with another male sailor.
Jones and another sailor fell asleep in the same bunk late one evening while watching “The Vampire Diaries” on a computer. Jones was on top of the covers, the other sailor was under the covers and both were fully clothed.
Jones’ attorney, Gary Myers claimed the Navy wanted to get rid of Jones because they suspected his client of being gay. Yet, there was no proof or admission of homosexual conduct.
Myers, working through LGBT military rights organization Servicemembers United, suggested the prosecution was simply trying to find a roundabout way to get rid of a sailor they suspected was gay using the charge “unprofessional conduct”. Military personnel are no longer permitted to be discharged from the armed services for being gay.
