Most people remember prom as that awkward night when you are dressed funny, you’re not sure if you are going to get laid and you have to make a pact to stay friends forever with some of the people you went to high school with.

For those that later came out of the closet, prom is an even scarier night because you have to hide who you really are in front of the whole school or fear humiliation. Two organizations, with the help of a couple of national celebrities, are trying to change that.

SunServe, Safe Schools South Florida and OUTlet are hosting Broward County’s first gay and friends inclusive prom in a decade from 7-11 p.m. on May 21 at SunServe, 1480 SW 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $40 and about 300 people are expected to attend the Alice In Wonderland

themed event.

The next night Pridelines Youth Services is hosting their annual youth prom . This year’s theme is A Night On Mount Olympus and will be held at Florida International University’s Biscayne Bay campus from 7-11 p.m. on Saturday May 22. Only those under 24- year-old will be allowed to attend. Tickets are $20 per person and $30 for a couple.

Both of these proms will feature special guest hosts Emmy nominated choreographer and star of VH1 reality show Brooke Knows Best, Glenn Douglas Packard and his model boyfriend Daniel Miagany.

“How awesome is it that you can take someone to the dance that you really like even if they are the same sex, at this time in my life I was hiding my male crushes,” Packard said. “I think a Gay Prom is such a good thing, its eliminating the term in the closet at a young age which is important.”

Packard, who came out to his family on national television via his reality show, said he wishes a GLBT prom would have existed when he was growing up in a small town in the Midwest.

“Hell yes, I would have not been in the closet for so many years, I could have let that exchange student from Norway, Trond, know about my boy crush,” Packard said. “I preach all the time never be ashamed of who you are, and it took me until my adult years to understand this. Because it was so scary as a teen to let people know I was gay. It would have been nice to not of hid and to feel a sense of acceptance in my small town community.”

Miami’s hottest gay couple plans on singing Don’t Stop Believing at one of the proms and Miagany said he’s got some killer moves he’s going to show off on the dance floor.

“I wish I had the galls to come out at a young age as these kids have,” Miagany said. “I went to high school in South America and even though we had a similar gathering (except we brought our close relatives) these two will be my first proms and gay for that matter. I think, looking back, I would have been curious and definitely shocked that there would be an event for people like me.”

Packard said he enjoys being a role model for GLBT kids and hopes they can learn from his experiences growing up in the closet.

“I think the youth today need to have confident gay couple role models,” Packard said. “There is not a lot out there in celebrity land and its nice to be able to show the teens a couple that have fun, share each others dreams, and are looking forward to spending a lifetime together and starting a family.”
