SANTA FE, NM (AP) – New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez is canceling plans to travel to a state Republican convention in North Carolina amid controversy over a new law there affecting access to public restrooms by transgender people.
A spokesman for Martinez said Tuesday that the governor and chairwoman of the Republican Governors Association has a scheduling conflict and will be in New Mexico during the May convention.
Spokesman Chris Sanchez declined to specify the scheduling conflict or say whether the change had to do with North Carolina’s new law that prohibits transgender people to use public restrooms that don’t match the gender they were assigned at birth.
North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory is running for re-election. He stands by the bathroom-access regulation but wants legislators to repeal restrictions on discrimination claims by workers.
