Who Knew? – Toxic Relationships: Bug Chasers and Gift Givers

-Most of us spend our lives avoiding contracting even the slightest germ, much less an infective virus. We live in a world of hand sanitizer stations at shopping centers and medicine cabinets filled with multi-vitamins and some sort of natural tea product. So it may be unimaginable that there are individuals intentionally seeking out diseases, hoping they will be lucky enough to get bitten by “the bug.” They are called “bug chasers.” This term usually refers to a sub-culture of gay men that intentionally seek to get infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Gay Panic as Advertising

-In what has to be the most offensive ad campaign I’ve seen in a long time, Key Biscayne’s Academy Of Martial Arts RDCA in Florida has decided the best way to sell their karate classes is to use gay panic.

The print ads, created by ad agency Zubi, feature young boys doing “feminine things” like wearing their mother’s high heels or playing with make-up. The cure for this “shocking” behavior and the best way to “man up” your obviously burgeoning queer kid? Super butch Karate classes.

To Love and Hope and Disconnect

- I feel like the soul of my not-yet- deceased great grandfather inhabits my body from time to time. While I’m sure that my ancient patriarchal family member of three generations prior wouldn’t care to hear me talk about him being dead (yet), the old man inside me is just begging to complain about those crazy kids today with their goddam Internet.

Fort Lauderdale Hosts Health Summit

-Over 300 Expected to Attend Event – The ninth annual Southeast Regional Gay Men’s Health Summit will be held August 25 through 30, 2010 at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport Hotel. This year’s Southeast Regional is being held in conjunction with the biennial National Gay Men’s Health Summit which this year chose Fort Lauderdale for its location.

Former Manhunt Employee Feels Transgender Discrimination

Partner Fights for Dating Website Owner to “Make it Right” – In September 2008, A.J. Spellman was so excited to begin working at Online Buddies, LLC, the parent company for Manhunt.com, one of the most popular gay dating and hookup websites all over the United States. Spellman was hired as a Customer Service Representative, which would allow him to help take care of his disabled fiancée, Bri Crofton.
